Still haven't figured this one out, or been able to 100% ID it. It's continued to grow rather well indoors this winter, getting quite large compared to when I brought it in last fall. My larger upright elephant ear has done the opposite and gotten smaller once coming indoors (leaves are half the size they used to be). But this plant, the leaves have remained the same size, if not gotten larger. Leaves are between 1.5 and 2 feet in length. Plant is now about 4.5 feet tall.
Any ideas what on earth this one is?
I've included several photos. Excuse the mess, we're moving in less than a week.
EE ID - Still can't figure this one out
I believe it is Alocasia Macrorrhiza commonly called the upright elephant ear. A flower would give me a more positive proof. Macrorrhiza can behave differently in different situations and until mature some can be the same species but look almost totally different. Different temps lighting and food can all play major roles in this. I have seen some with bo back lobes when young to almost what looks like coloration in the veins all due to situations.
I have also been thinking it's the Upright EE. That was my initial ID, but it looked so different from my larger one that it again made me start wondering. Knowing their growth and "look" can vary, that makes me feel more positive about that initial ID. Thanks :)
Brian isn't it a bit advanced for a mac to still have peltate leaves?? (But I am sure you know these plants better in cultivation than I do!)
the M. rubra one looks like a red stemmed robusta..very nice plant. :-)
I was shocked this week to see the plant start to send up what I imagine will become a spathe (sp?) flower. But it certainly looks like that's what it is. I'll know in a week or so I imagine. The more I've looked into it, the more I believe this is definitely the alocasia noted by Brian above.
Here's a photo of what I assume will become the flower (and a new leaf beside it).
Any chance it could be A. gageana?
That is the only EE that does even better as a house plant than outside for me.
ROX
This one was in the gh all winter. I brought it out when we had a warm spell but sadly failed to return it to the gh when we had a freeze last week end. I think it will come out again but looks pretty sad now. I think it's Alocasia macrorrhiza portodora.
Rox,
Funny you should mention that. This EE literally exploded when I brought it indoors. It grew to an unbelievable size compared to before. Granted I also put it in a bigger pot. But it seems to love indoors versus out.
I was looking at some photos and I feel it looks like Alocasia Macrorrhiza also ? Like Bwilliams mentioned above.
