I was told it was a desert rose from the lady who gave it to me. She is from Vietnam and grows them from seed She said they won't grow true from cutting????????????

I just realized that you gave me the botanical name........gee, thanks!!!!! I want to try and propagate, but I missed getting the seeds when one those gust of 40 mph winds came through and tore those great big pods off and blew them away...do you think I waited to long to take the pods off?

LOL, right after I posted I thought desert rose too but decided to wait for others to chime in.

Desert Rose. Final answer.

Bessemer City, NC(Zone 7b)

Oh yes, Adenium obesum.

Prineville, OR(Zone 6a)

A lovely pachypodium.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Looks Like Desert Rose to me too ! My neighbor had one and it bloomed all the time.
Oh how I wish I had got a cutting.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Hi Betty, Your lovely plant is definately a desert rose. I have 6 of them, some over 4 ft wide. These are the easiest things in the world to propagate....just cut off a piece, put it in some water - or even in a pot with a bit of dirt - and it will root. I even found a piece that I had trimmed off, but missed during the clean-up, growing in another pot where it had landed. Enjoy!

Anyone have a cutting for shipping !! My neighbor died and her daughter took the plant.

thanks for the advice with propagating cuttings from my desert rose....am going to try some in water and some in a soilless mix...wish me luck..thanx again

Siskiyou, it isn't pachypodium which has thorns and is commonly known as Madagascar palm.

Thailand had huge container adeniums. Here are some great ones outside the Chinese museum in Pattaya, Thailand. Moss rose is the ground cover in these pots. Pot and plants are over 6 foot tall.

BerryGail your beautiful Desert Rose made Photo of the Day ! Caongratilations ! Thanks for sharing.

Bettygail: Think some of those seeds blew East to Florida in those 40 mph winds? LOL. That's a Beautiful Desert Rose Plant. I've always wanted to try one of those, but don't they have thorns? I'm not crazy about plants with thorns .... gotten jabbed too many times over the years, but I might just have to find one of those babies! It's really pretty!

hcmcdole, yes, you're right. I meant to say 'a lovely caudiciform'. Pachypodium is a genus. Adeniums are caudiciforms.
My mistake.

So, is this the one that has thorns, or not?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

No, it does not have any thorns. The stems are actually very smooth...I really will try hard to start cuttings a little later after I prune and new foliage comes on. I will be happy to ship to anyone.....once they are rooted....

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

I would like one. If you can part with one after going through the labor of rooting it.

(Zone 1)

Ooooh Bettygail, I would love a cutting also, or seeds if you get any. I thought the Desert Rose and Madagascar Palm were the same plant, but maybe not, unless some have thorns and some don't.

That is a really nice plant you have!
