I'm looking for more info on a Red/black stemmed EE Alocasia I have.
I've looked in plant files and googled it but cant find one that looks like my plant
I just need someone pass along a link with info about this plant.
I've been looking for a few weeks now and would just like to look some things up.
I've had a lot of problems with this plant and its doing much better now.
I'd like to transplant outside soon.
Would like to know whats the best location and what kind of watering it needs.
Today I took it out of the pot and found about 50 bulbs within the dirt.
( i thought that was pretty cool )
Anyhow if anyone knows the true name and a site to go to for reference I'd really appreciate it
Thanks,
GG
Anyone have knowledge about EEs / can help me out.
Alocasia Macrorrhiza rubra. This is a dark stem upright grower very similar to your regular macs but with more color. It is not as easy to grow as the regular green mac but it is fairly easy. It can get very large.
Thanks BW ,
Now I have some place to start.
GG, hope you potted the bulbs up. Mine is not doing very well inside but I hope it will revive when I'm able to move it outside in another 2 months.
Yeah mine didn't do so well indoors either.
I'm getting ready to pot up the bulbs.
I have so many I don't know that I have enough pots
to pot them all up LOL
Do you have any helpful hints on this plant?
I still cant find anything on web about this plant in particular.
I found for the green variety but not the rubra.
I let mine dry out a little between waterings. To me "dry out" means dry down to about 1" below surface. Mine don't like to have wet feet when it is colder. I also like to mist it daily to keep away spider mites. They are in my jacuzzi room next to an east facing window; the room is typically 50% relative humidity with a high of 70F and low of 60F.
ROX
Thanks rox,
I was finding that too. less water brought it back stronger.
It had the bad case of Scale and I used some "oil " on it cut back on the water and its doing just fine.
I'm not sure that A. plumbea and A. rubra are the same plant, but plumbea looks like that too.
How large are your bulbs? Maybe you can work some trades.
Plumbea will have a more gray to darker looking leaf. The stems are usually dark to streaked. In most cases the underside of the leaf is also discolored maroon or blotches of dark coloring. All depending on which form of plumbea you have. As far as growing these I have seen almost all mentioned grown in water but I do not recommend this. I have found that if grown young in wetter soil they will adjust to living in damper conditions if the temps are fairly warm. But for most of us we get the plants usually a bit larger and from sources that grow them in containers. If one was to take these plants and put them in a damp situation they almost immediatly rot. In most cases temp from 70 to 85 water when needed and allow drying out between waterings. As for pest many chemicals can rid the plants of known pest but I find in most cases the cause is usually lack of air flow that causes the initial breakout.
very good tip BW, lack of airflow would make sense being it was in the house.
As far as water. I dont know. I guess it could have just been a coincidence, but once I cut back on the water. ( i left it alone for a week and a half almost two ) it started sending up new leaves and had two little babies that came up. ?? so I dont know. I guess I will have to have the plant dictate what it wants and I'll learn from there. LOL
I potted up some of the bulbs and have plenty left.
I guess I will store until I find something to trade for. I'm not too sure what I want next LOL. I"ve gotten so many new plants. Time to browse and find something that interests me.
Thanks everyone for all the tips.
