mushy stems...

Marin, CA(Zone 9b)

Hi,

My big Brugmansias that are in the ground have stem as big as my arm. Today I noticed they are mushy close to the ground.
Does this mean they froze completely and will not grow back?

In fear I await your expertise information and condolences...

Gee that is too bad. All the way down? Even if you have just 1 node left above the ground, they will grow back fairly fast. The one year I lost one to the ground, it took almost into the middle of the summer to start coming back. If it happened again, I would just go buy a new one if it was of a variety that was readily available as early as I could. But I bet yours will come back from the roots.

You must have gotten really cold in San Anselmo. What a shame! Had you covered them? Though I am hearing covering didn't help in some areas.

Hardest thing for me now is not to rush out and prune off the dead areas next week on all my frosted plants. I am going to fertilize everything early March with a heavy hand to get them all going.

I wish I knew if this was it for cold snaps.

I didn't cover; they were "just broomsticks"... Didn't think it would get this cold, we didn't get over 40 degrees today, it froze so hard my walkway was completely iced...
They are Charles Grimaldi, real big ones...
Yep, all the way to the ground, mush!
It is 30 degrees right now!
Brrrrrrr....

Uh oh! Mushy stems doesn't sound good, Christie. Hope they'll come back from the roots. Keep your fingers crossed. It's not over till the fat lady sings ...... and I'm not singing yet!

Hi Mrs_Colla

I live in zone 8b and I usually cut mine back to the ground in the fall for cuttings and they come back from the roots every year.

I sure hope yours does too.
