Hardy cyclamen

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

I planted hardy cyclamen a couple of years ago, and it never came up. I notified Spring Hill or Breck's (I don't recall now which it was) and they replaced them. Well, this year..........guess what? BOTH came up! I can see that they are different ones, and I haven't a clue as to which they are. Maybe someone can tell me. All I know is they were supposed to be hederifolium.

Very nice!

Are they near each other? I'm thinking that they could cross and you'd prolly have other leaf patterns come from the seed

Yes, they're right beside each other. :-)

They look great, but I doubt they are C. hederifolium. More like C. coum, the first one looks like my C coum with white flowers. The second is a special form I would still say C.coum but I can't tell you which.

C. hederifolium leaves do vary but they are larger and more pointed, like an ivy leaf. This is mine..

The second one's leaves look a lot like C mirabile Tilebarn Nicholas. You would have to see the flowers to get a better idea.

Aha, and no less than a bud on that last picture, Well done Kbaumle.

Hi, Kenton!

That picture was taken back in October. The other two I just took last week. :-)

The flowers on both were pale pink. I know I took a couple of pictures when they were in bloom, but I can't find them now!

Found it! I had never taken it off the card, because it wasn't a good picture. They actually look more of a lavender than pink in this picture, and maybe they were, but I remember them being pale pink.

Good to read you, Kylee.
What a great plant. When was the last picture taken?

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

Probably the same time - November, I think, maybe even into December. I know they were blooming quite late still, and I was surprised.

The flowers look like C. cilicum, which flower in October to November. Does the leaf closeup belong to the same plant, they don't quite fit.

Those are flowering from the first one I posted at the top of the thread.

It still looks like C cilicum to me, in this pic the leaves do show a similar shape, there is more silvering to the outer edges but leaves vary a lot with orign of location

Look at all the other species, none come close.

wallaby, I searched my records and looked at the order (it was from Breck's), and it was indeed Cyclamen cilicium. And I was mistaken about what happened with these. The first ones I planted didn't come up, so they sent a replacement, which did. Then I bought the C. cilicium a year ago. Both came up at the same time this year. If I can find the original order on the first ones, I'll report back here.

The second one if it had pink flowers and flowered in the autumn is most likely C. mirabile Tilebarn Nicholas, which has this leaf pattern and pale pink flowers.

Now I want one of the C mirabile Tibebarn Nicholas! And others......

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

I can't find the older order, but anyway...

I just LOVE these. I want more, too! They are in full shade, under a serviceberry. They appear to like it there. I've also got Korean violet and wild woodland violets there, as well as columbine. And then there is the Solomon's seal and dog-tooth violet and thalictrum. Oh, to have a little woods to plant these things!!

OH! Right thru the heart: C mirabile Tibebarn Nicholas. Gasp, gush, and swoon!

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Well I can get it from the growers themselves!

What a fabulous inventory!

Yes, Your're so lucky to live in the olde UK!

Denver, CO

But in the US, we can order British seed of all of those from here, which is what I'm doing:

(put "Cyclamen" in the genus search box and see three pages of the lovely things)

Look at these.........

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

There are pics on their site of many of those if you wish to be led.....but I think they will be properly grown at Tilebarn and the price of seed is quite high, so come August I 'may' purchase some already grown.

Where you see a little flower there is a pic, some beauties too.

Northeast, LA(Zone 8a)

Is the plant sold at LOWES ect...that are outside with other yard plants hardy Cyclamen ?

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

They might have them outside in your zone, but the ones we have at our Lowe's aren't hardy. They're beautiful, but they're florist's cyclamen (Cyclamen persicum). Their flowers are generally larger than the hardy cyclamen.

Here is my C. coum 'Pewter group' seedling as of a few days ago. Two-headed-hydra bud and all.

Whoa! At first glance at your photo, Kenton, I thought, "Ewww....there are worms in that picture!" LOL. Love the leaves, and very cool double (once I realized it wasn't a worm)!

Wink wink!
