winter sowing or started any seeds
I start many of my seeds in the garage this time of year. I have a 3'x4' heated/lighted seed box I made inexpensively a few years back. Because the weather here is so unpredictable I no longer wanted to take the chance that new seedlings would be killed off by a last hard frost or ice storm. Now about the 3rd week of March if the weather looks favorable I begin to harden off the seedlings for about 10 days then put them in the ground.
Moretz, I wasn't planning to wintersow this year because of the weather, but the lack of room in the greenhouse at the moment made me do it along with some seeds that required cold treatment. Here is a list of what I sowed:
Hosta Elegans
Hosta sagae
Hosta Mix
Mini Angel Trumpet
Mum Football Mix
Mum Polar Star
Hollyhock Dble Yellow
Hollyhock Chocolate
Lavatera
Clematis Rhapsody
Clematis Sweet Autumn
Clematis Nelly Moser
The hollyhock are already coming up!!!!

well our winter has finally settled in (i think) going to be 60 today so not so sure if winter is here to stay or not,i just been putting mine in the fridge and then take them out after 4 weeks or so,seems to work that way for me,our winter hasnt let me do the winter sowing
I've started broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower & head lettuce and will add additional or new ones as the weeks go by. I have a garden window in my kitchen for the seedlings until my plant light arrives.
i want to get started really bad lol but i know i wont have enough room to do them all and i have a small gh but it is full and i dont have enough lights to do all my seeds but my mother in law said i could use hers since her daughter isent going to use it this year so i have a whole gh to play with, but i am going to be using a heater in it and i know it will be exspensive to keep it warm enough until april or may,i dont know if i want to wait until march to start ALL my seeds or do s little ata time? but if i do a little it will cost me just as much as it would if it was full, and i know some of them dont need to be done until march, so any suggestions on what i should do? plmk and thxs i am soooooooooo excited about this
Well, the average last frost date is around March 30th, give or take 11 days from what I read. I'm planning around that. For my warm vegtables, it was suggested to plant seed two weeks following the last frost date or when danger of it has passed. I wouldn't think you'd need to heat the gh in May. As long as the evenings stay in the fifties, would your plants be okay? I don't know what you're growing, though.
Morets, don't try to heat the greenhouse to growing temps. Just dont freeze temps is best and invest in one of these:

I have one with my forced fan oscillating heater plugged in and it works beautifully. The temp is set to 40. It seems to raise my electric bill by maybe 5 dollars a month if we have a lot of nights in the low 30's to upper 20's. Also collect 2 ltr soda bottles, paint them black and fill them with water (passive solar heating). It's astonishing how well those work!

thxs so much for all the info, what are the bottles suppose to do?keep the gh warmer? at 40 degrees is this good to start seeds? plmk and thxs
Ms_Carolina
i have all kinds of seeds to start lol,i have been in alot of the swaps and have alot of new things to try this year from seeds,i cant wait thxs for helping
moretz
Some seeds like it warmer, but for the most part it just takes a bit longer for them to germinate. The black bottles filled with water collect heat in the day and release it at night. If I'm in a hurry for seeds to germinate I will put my trays with seedlings on top of a row of them. It cost way too much money to keep a greenhouse at growing temps and really all you gain is a week or two at the most because in the daytime, mine atleast heats up into the 80's & 90's.

sounds cool will have to try that thxs
