Hi everyone,
I'm so excited to be able to share my first photo with this group. This is a NOID, but has been a reliable bloomer for me. Although I love the purple blossoms, I love the ruffled leaves even more. The picture really doesn't capture the yellow center, but it's there! LOL
First Photo to Share

Beautiful GrowHappy!!! I think those are girl leaves! Do you happen to have a full side shot of your pretty bloomer?

hows your weather there,?i know in shilo its really bad.i halven,t heard from my friend this morning so i guess she,s iced over
Starfly...The roads were supposed to be iced over this morning but the cars are moving along just fine. My town in just a few miles north of Champaign-Urbana in IL. We've been quite fortunate here. Nothing too crazy with the weather. I think we've had only one good snowfall this year. Don't mind the snow but could do without the ice.
Have a good morning. Oh, 22 with the wind chill though.
Laura
That's beautiful!!! Really pretty leaves and blooms. Way to go!
GH She is really Beautiful ! Good Growin' Girl!! : )
Nancy
Thanks GH for the side shot. The only Girl Leaf av I have tends to grow up instead of laying flat. Your's is flatter than mine. I can't figure out why mine is growing up.
Hi Grow Happy,
Enjoying this mild weather? I too especially like the foliage on your plant. Here is a link you might enjoy showing the various leaf types. Scroll down to where it shows 'girl' leaves.
I would love to find out more about girl vs. boy leaves. I never knew there was such a thing! Goes to show that I don't know much about AVs, huh? :)
Snow, I am SO lovin' this weather! LOL It's awesome, but also begs the question: Why the heck is it so warm in the middle of January?????? !!! I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that we can breeze through February without much snow. Oh, can you include that link you referenced above? Thanks a bunch!
I don't know which link Snowrose tried to put in, but I'll see if I can post the AVSA one... http://www.avsa.org/BlossomFoilage.htm
Also, there is a ton of great information and useful links in the "sticky" threads at the top of this forum. :-)
GrowHappy, your AV is just gorgeous! That foliage is stunning... I love girl leaves! They do seem to be a bit trickier to grow sometimes though...
BTW, I don't think there's any such thing as "boy" leaves... "girl" leaves aren't just called that because they tend to be ruffly... The first series of hybrids with this sort of foliage all had "girl" in their names (like 'Peppermint Girl', 'Silly Girl', etc), and I think that's how the term came about.
Happy, I've been enjoying the mild weather too, but I'm wondering whether all my spring bulbs will have a chance to put on a show if they don't get enough "chill hours"... well, I suppose if they just sprout up and don't bloom, they'll just store extra energy for a really spectacular bloom in 2008!
Very nice...please continue to share your pics.
Thanks Critter....that's the exact link I meant to include.
Grow Happy - It's just like spring here today as you know and everything's getting goofed up. Spring bulbs are emerging and I did see a cherry tree in town blooming. My sister said the Wash. DC tidal basin cherry trees are blooming also. I love the weather but hope it won't harm fruit trees for next years crop.
Plain violet leaves are sometimes referred to as 'boy' leaves as you can see in the link Critter kindly included which I forgot to post.
GH your plant is gorgous nice growing you've done a good job !
I don't think you'd find this beauty on Rob's his are mostly Minis/Semis and then Ma's Standards.
Maybe you'd find plants like this beauty by Optimara , Everfloris Space plants by Optimara !
Gh I know cameras do trick to colors screens do also. Is your plant more Purple or blue ?
Most likely it is an Optimara Girl some are in the Rhapsodie series.
Their not that easy to find so you are lucky to have one !
Wish I could find them all :))
Here is a list of the ones with scalloped girl foliage. Some have pictures some don't . There are a few that look like your beauty to me !

Your's is much more beautiful than any of their photo's wish they had better pictures like yours.
beautiful plant. I love the booms and the frilly leaves.
Snow- If the cherry blossoms are blooming now, how will this affect the annual Festival? I've missed the past 3 years, but am determined to get down there this year. I just love it!
The bulbs must be terribly confused, Critter. Do you have any of the very early blooming ones , like Crocus?
Allison- my violet is purple. I wish that I could find a true blue one. I've read that they are hard to find.

Good question, GH...we'll have to see. It is a delightful stroll around there during the festival. Do you have any Marie Burns av varieties? She's our very own Baltimore violet celeb and I've told her more than once that I'm her biggest fan. Wonderful person and outstanding grower and hybridizer.
I don't have any "spring" blooms yet, but I do have some species tulips with leaves up... I'm not only worried that things will bud up and then get frozen, I'm also concerned that without enough "chill hours" the bulbs may not be able to form flowers this year, although I think that's more a problem for the hybrid tulips (I have very few of those) than for daffs, crocus, species tulips, etc... it's just not something I've had to worry about before, so I don't even know how many days of what sort of temperatures they really need. Well, as long as the bulbs survive I'll eventually get to see them bloom!
Thanks, Snow, I'd forgotten that I'd seen the term "boy leaf" used on occasion... and I guess I didn't scroll far enough down that page I linked to see it!
Snow, I don't have any named varieties. I had no idea we have a hybridizer right here in Baltimore! Do you have any pics you can post? I'd love to see them!
Yes, Critter, let's think in terms of survival at this point.:)))
GH
Hey GH! Beautiful plant. I love the leaves, too.
Burn's plants are way awesome ! I grew a few. My favorite I grew was
Rain Man (7554) 09/19/1991 (M. Burns) Semidouble-double dark blue large star/wide white-green edge. Dark green, quilted, glossy/maroon back. Large
Emily (M. Burns) is nice to Bluebirds sells her ! Also Magic (M. Burns) ,Rain Man (M. Burns) , Which Burn's plants are you growing Snow !
Violet Treasure - I've grown just about all of Marie's hybrids at one time or another including Rain Man and other more obscure ones. What I have now are Majestic, Magnolia (which grows huge...lousy pic in FC), and I guess my favorite registered one now is Fancy Nights (chimera). It's a shame she hasn't registered many of her outstanding hybrids which usually have dark glossy foliage, star blossoms, and are bred to grow large and be worthy showplants.
I guess it's not always that easy to register plant with the list of rules and all.
The ones I have grown were really nice. Do you have any pictures of the ones your growing now !!!
Is Fancy Nights (M. Burns) registered now ?
My FC just has Fancy Nights (M. Burns) Single-semidouble chimera lavender and pink fantasy star/wide lavender stripe. Dark green, heart-shaped. Large
But it's messed up and I need to download my new CD Joe snet last week.
The picture in FC you can't make out the flowers at all. Do you have a better close up please ??
Majestic (6380) 09/20/1986 (M. Burns/R. Nadeau) Semidouble medium blue star. Dark green, quilted, glossy/red back. Large
Majestic is so pretty an oldie almost a Vintage :)) WOW !
along with ; Magnolia (6378) 09/20/1986 (M. Burns/R. Nadeau) Semidouble-double light pink. Black-green, ovate, pointed, glossy, pebbled/red back. Large
I do also love the dark black-green foliage glossy red backs so pretty !
Ocean eyes is so very pretty too ! I fount 21 reg. Av's by Burns in FC. and 41 av's not registered. Also most of Burns Avs are large growing !
Few standards and only one semi mins ! Rochelle's Baby Colors (9655) 05/01/2006 (M. Burns/R. Armstrong) Semidouble-double medium pink star/purple fantasy. Variegated dark green, cream and pink, pointed/red back. Semiminiature
Can you get leaves or plants from her !
Marie hardly grows any of her own hybrids now I don't think. Yes, Ocean Eyes makes a good showplant. Her standards are bred to grow large or very large.
The Fancy Nights pic in FC isn't very good at all. You know, FC is fantastic software but so often I think the pics are not truly representative of what some really good varieties can be. I think of FC pics as sort of a general idea....some are great and some are definitely not.
Yes the picture of Fancy Nights in FC and of other AV's do not give a lot of plants justice. We should all send better ones in when we have them ! Do you have a better picture of Fancy Nights ? I wonder what plant Fancy Night is a sport of ?
I see it is not registered either.
Oh gorgous now you can it's Chimera Snow ! Thank You ! You should send a photo to First Class ! Thanks for sharing your beauty !
