Caladium for sun?

Wichita, KS(Zone 6a)

I want to plant a large row of caladiums this spring in front of a fence. The area is on the west side of a picket fence. Will get sun from about 11am til 6pm at which time the shadow from the house will cover them. I have read that there is a few that can take full sun. What is your opinion? I want to go with a white and/ or red.

There are several that love full sun. In the red, I would grow Red Flash and for the white, I would grow Aaron (gr/wh) or White Queen (wh/gr/some reddish-pink). All three of these grow about the same height-about 2'.

Another Red that does "great" in full sun is Florida Cardinal

I thought about Fl Cardinal, but it grows shorter than Aaron, and if she is mixing them together in the planting than Red Flash is taller. If Cardinal is going in front of the Aaron, then its better!

Check out this store on eBay - it's run by a DGer named Bill. He has wonderful Caladiums, and a couple grow in full sun:

Ditto to what skaz421 stated...cannot beat the prices and the quality! As an aside-my White Queen grew much taller than my Florida Cardinal!

I know a DGer who sells Caladiums. I can attest to the quality of Bill's bulbs - I grew them last year, and the plants were wonderful. Bill is a great guy to deal with, he's got a large variety, and I think you'll find his prices very competitive. I am definitely going back to him for more bulbs this year.

You won't be unhappy with his caladiums. He's one of the best I've purchased from.

Nice collection, although I have caladiums in my shady spots already (they should be emerging soon) I need sun tolerant also, so I'm going with the Aaron & Florida Cardinal bulbs for my white and red 'zones'. I don't understand why they don't sell these out here!

Bill's Caladiums at Caladiums4Less are superb! I have HIGHLY recommended them to everyone. They are upper quality bulbs, and he has a fantastic selection for outstanding prices. My yard is full of his offerings, and I just ordered more. Here in Orlando, I grow White Queen, Red Flash, Carolyn Whortons, and Florida Sweethearts in full hot Florida sun. I also have been successful with Gingerland and Miss Muffets, if I keep their roots moist.

I have never grown Caladiums, thought they needed shade. As I was reading thru, I see that is not always necessary. Do they need constant wateringing to be happy?--as I don't want to add more maintenance to my garden.

Tammy, plant them thicker if you want to plant them in the sun, so the leaves shade the roots. Try the pot method if you have the solid clay soil that a lot of Ohio has. They DO need to stay semi moist at the roots, so you will have to water them if you have them in full sun....but if you have them in filtered light they will do well.

Tammylp,

Caladiums do not need alot of maintenaince. They do not need alot of water when you first plant the bulbs, in fact it's the opposite. You water spareingly until the bulbs throws up it's leaves, depending on how hot it gets and how much sun they're getting, you might have to water every day or every other day. When they start drying out the plant will begin to wilt, when that happens you water them and they'll perk back up within an hour or two. They'll definitely add some spectacular color to your gardens!!

:) Been soooooo busy it's not funny.......finally getting a few things to settle down so I can do a few things for myself. My yard needs TLC, and so does my house. I'm glad to be back on DG, it keeps me from overspending on Ebay! Weird weather we've had down here in Florida this year eh? I'm waiting for all of my caladiums to pop up, the yard looks so dull without them. I've seen little sprouts all over, so I know a good rain and a week or 2 more of warm weather, and they will be well on their way!
Hope your business has another successful year, I can't recommend you HIGHLY enough!
