My dogs are on Frontline and Heartgard+.
The other day, when I was brushing Lily, I noticed a tape worm egg on her butt. Ok, they do have a lot of land to run around on, they can pick this stuff up, no worries....I called my small animal vet and told them and asked them to leave me some tape worm meds for everybody at the front desk. And then I asked my husband to pick them up.
My husband came home and said, "Yo, honey bunniest...your wormy animals just set me back over $400."
WHOA.
I feel like I got used and abused. I really dislike most of the small animal vets I've run into , it's like they feel they have a license to print money. All those meds probably took some tech 20 mins work to dole out and the meds themselves? Maybe $20? Ugh. I am so bent.
Anyway, this does have a point, and that is.....do you keep your dogs on a preventive deworming program? With what? Where do you get it? I am comfortable with assigning my scientist / brain trust husband the job of calculating out dosages and measuring appropriately.
I am a horse person and thus far my dogs have just sort of coexisted with us....I've never paid a lot of attention to them other than making sure they didn't chase horses, steal stuff, or pee on the floor. Once a year I'd drop them all off at the small animal vets and say the dog equivalent of "fill 'er up" and go back to pick them up figuring they were good for another year....but now I am starting to slow down on the horse front and I realize I've been missing the boat on this dog thing.
