Iochroma

Marin, CA(Zone 9b)

Somewhere on this beautiful website, someone of you great people introduced to me....another MUST HAVE, the Iochroma.
I looked it up in my gazillion plantbooks, and the only one who mentions it is (ofcourse) The Western Garden Bible!
I ordered 3 plants today...
I am going to plant them under my mature Brugmansias, there is room for them, and their growing conditions are alike.
Any objections, tips?
(and "don't buy more than you can plant" isn't a tip, LOL)

Hi Christie.

I've grown Iochroma before and would probably hesitate to put them under anything. They love full sun and mine got to about 5 ft. tall in one year. Maybe there is a new cultivar that can handle the shade, tho. Have fun with them. They should go crazy in your warmer climate.

5 feet in one year?! My son has been going for 6 years and isn't that tall :-)

Thanks for the heads up, I'll put them somewhere else, where they will get all OOOOOH's an AAAAAH's for themselves.

I bought a little 4" pot about 1 1/2 years ago, had it in a 1 gal for a while then planted it in the ground where it took off and was rarely out of bloom. Before the frost this week, it topped the 6 ft fence easy and was in serious need of staking as it was flopping over my walkway.

What a pretty plant. Sue, will it survive this cold weather we're having out here? Hope so.
Now I want one.

mrs_colla if you get a chance, come to the plant sales at Strybing arboretum. (schedule http://www.sfbotanicalgarden.org/plant_sales/plant_sales.htm) there are almost always a variety of 1 gallon iochroma for sale for reasonable prices. (not to mention other great plants!!)

If I were to ever grow one again I woud train it to be a standard. They get too big and are so floppy, I took all of mine out a year or 2 after I planted them.

If you ever get a chance when in Oakland, go to the Lakeside garden for they have a huge tree of one. Just huge. I see bigs ones around now and then. Berkeley Hort has a real tall one in their display bed on the far left of the nursery.

I see them in gallon cans for $6.99 all the time. In fact Lali, Regan's had some yesterday but theirs are probably $12.99. LOL

Here is a pretty one I saw growing somewhere. I liked it because it had a white edge that made it rather unique. I need to remember where I saw it. I can't find one online to get the name.

Opps wrong plum one. That one above is the one from Lakeshore I do believe.

jltbaw, I hope it's OK, if not, I will start again but do it as a standard as Kell suggests, I love her idea for standards for so many things! Leaves room underneath. Even my old brugs, if they die, I will replace with a single stem standards.

I have a purple and a white one I got from a fellow DGr. They didn't do much cause they didn't get enough sun. I can't wait to move my purple one so it gets bigger this year! It froze pretty bad the last few nights, so I hope it comes back. I rooted some cuttings off the purple one, I am gonna try to train it to be a standard too....
