callas

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I'm wondering if I'll have any success growing callas if I don't get them till April from the co-op. Does anyone have any input on starting them that late in the spring (in 8b)? For me, late Feb. is when spring starts poking it's head up....By mid May, it's HOT here.

Sandi..you can plant them anytime..I have planted them in Summer, Fall, Spring..but in our hot zones...plant them in Morning sun only...they can't take our hot sun ...especially during summer....Jeanne

Thanks Jeanne... They looked so tempting in the catalog, but the delivery date for the co-op was a little iffy for me. I'm going back to order them now. Appreciate the response. Sandi

Sandi, I love Callas! They stay green all year for me. I plan on getting some more....I like that dark purple one that almost looks black.....have you seen those? Even when they're not in bloom the foliage is pretty.

The Bloomingbulb co-op is trying to get the black callas since so many people have requested them. I think there's still room for a few more participants if you're interested, fly..... The prices seem reasonable for most all the bulbs. I'm taking the plunge because I want things that are going to hopefully return next year. I wasn't sure the callas would be hardy for my zone. I'm ordering a lot of other bulbs just to see how they fare in our hot dry summers. I ordered a bunch of False Shamrock-Iron Cross bulbs. Last year I saw a pot of them on DG. I tracked down a source and they were expensive. The ones at Bloomingbulbs this year are so cheap, I can kill half of them and still come out ahead....

Thanks BB, I'll check them out! Is that the name of the company?

The co-op is on DG. Just click over to the co-op forum and look for Bloomingbulb Calla and Misc bulb co-op honchoed by INVOICE99.....She's made it convenient to scroll thru the various bulbs to see what's available in this co-op.

Thanks, I'm not familiar with the co-op, it looks like a good deal, but complicated for the head honcho.

I'm sorry, I think the co-op's closed as of today. If they do offer a black calla, and you'd like some, I can order more and send some to you. I'll let you know which one's offered and how much if you're interested. The list is on the Q&A thread about the Bloomingbulb co-op if you want to see what's available. I told you wrong thread...

I just saw that it looks like it's closed. I went to their website and they don't have the black ones listed. If it wouldn't be too much trouble I would love that. Let me know what you find out and I'll decide how many.

Thank-you so much!

They were supposed to track the black one down by today...and add it to available bulbs. Anyway, I'll keep you posted. Black one sounds like it's a beauty.

I just did a quick search and found

Pacific Callas has Black Forest cheaper in bulk....+50 for $4.24 each.

Park Seed has Captain Palermo for 12.95 each.

Flowersbulbs has Hot Chocolate 25 for $50, that was the best price I found.

Maybe Invoice99 can find a better deal.

Thanks BB

Check out the other calla co-op that 4paws is heading up...they're ordering the Black Forest, etc. bulbs.....go to the end of the thread. They're posting choices now.... You may want to get in on that one Seems like there are three blacks.....I think they're ordering from Pacific Callas.

BB, I think I'll just order some on my own....it's all very confusing, but thanks for telling me about it and the offer :)
