I am making soil for a bog what is the best?

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

I have a hole in a clay hillside that I am layering with pond liner and plan on placing a mixture of compost and soils to make a wetland bog. Has anyone any Ideas on what type of soils are best to put in the bog? I am thinking that a pure sand bottom with lots of floating compost.

I thought I replied to this yesterday but I must have forgot to hit send.

I am by no means an expert but I look to nature for my answer and all the boggy areas here are clay with a decomposing leaf & debrie topping.

I hope this helps.

Hey, soferdig - haven't heard from you for quite awhile! Hope all is well, and am getting ready to start on the woodland - planted 20 various shrubs and understory trees last fall, and will prune the canopy trees come March - LOVE IT!

Anyway, I did exactly as Jeri and you offered for my bog and the plants are doing well -

Layered - liner (2 foot deep), 6 inches of sand, 6 inches of decaying leaves and woodland debris, 3 inches of sand blended with more leaves and debris, and topped with river rock of various sizes, no larger than 4 inches in diameter. Here's a pic from a couple of summers ago when it was just completed so the plants aren't there yet -

Thank you guys. I am planning a pond liner at the bottom of this hole to the left of the photo, and to cover it with rocks and then lay clay over the rocks. Then dump a bunch of compost into it and add leaves etc all the time. You have reassured me on how to accomplish this.
Dax you and I are on similar projects. I have been in Rocky MT Forum and trees and shrubs. I lost a best friend of mine (my dog Maddie) before Christmas so have not been too communicative. But I am better now. I have started to build an understory plantings of Hamamelis 'Arnolds Promise' X3, Cornus 'Happy Summer', Parrotia 'Vanessa' X2, Cornus Alterfolia 'Alba' and many shrubs in a 6000 Sq Ft area woodland. We will have to stay in touch. You are in Upper Midwest forum?

Sofer, you should wander over to the carnivorous plant forum. There is a LOT of good information on that forum about building your own bog.
