My double had leaves that did this all year, no matter what I did.. fertilize, spray for bugs, mist.. it was in the ground, so it couldn't have been rootbound, plenty of water... I don't get it.
Now I have a couple of seedlings doing it. What am I missing here?
What is the common cause for curly edged leaves? My poor babiez are saying something and I can't figure it out! Please help!
What makes leaves curl like this?
How warm is your room
Hey.. that's a thought.. Maby those got too close to the lights?
yup try that first if not try a little epsom salt
Funny you should show those, Joyce. About 2 weeks ago I had a tray of seedlings looked like that and they also were so very dark green. I searched online and I found a virus that had those exact symptoms but I couldn't figure out how they could have gotten it since they were inside since birth. I finally decided it was from this fancy new fertilizer I was using for begonias. I remembered in the last watering I had gotten to the end and the fertilizer was so concentrated at the bottom. I waited till they were very dry then flushed and flushed them with water. They look much better.
The only other thing I can think of is that broad mites turn the leaves under like that. So if the growing tips get brittle too, I would worry about those.
Could certainly be a nutritional deficiency too. Brugs are never boring are they?
Kell I have to new brugs doing this. I will flush them and let every one know if it help mine
Thank you Phicks.. I appreciate your input.. I'll give em a taste of it and see if they don't spit it out at me. LOL
Thank you Kell.... I'd like to know what virus that was.. The double seedling was the ONLY brug last year, out of all my seedlings that did that with the leaves all year.. It was inside at birth.. like these. The only difference now is, these seedlings that are curling are only a couple of leaves here and there... That seedling did it on EVERY leaf.. Another reason I think it was possibly a virus with that brug is cause out of 20 cuttings.. I got ONE to survive.. not good.. I don't loose cuttings THAT easy! I took those cuttings long before it got cold too.. all the other cuttings I took at that time are nearly ready to prune! LOL
These particular seedlings were very close to the lights, cause I like em short and squat.. I wondered if that could be part of it.. but it would be all of them, not just a couple of leaves right?
But yes, my house watering can has NOT been washed out.. That is a great idea for sure. I have melted houseplants by not mixing the fertilizer good enough.. ya never know till you get to the bottom!
Although I have only fertilized these babiez once (knowingly) with a VERY weak (less that 1 tsp MG to a gal of water) if it was mixed with what I used in the house.. it could have been real strong. When they are tiny, I used a turkey baster to reach the tiny cups I couldn't reach in the back.. and that was drawn from the bottom of the watering can.. I wonder if I was overdosing them!!?? My poooor babiez!! I'll give em a good rinsing when they dry out..
We all got a Neem bath yesterday.. LOL (that's what it seems like) so just in case the dreaded broad mites are trying to take a hold early.. I'll be on top of it.. I HOPE.. Oh gosh, remember last year? I was hating life for about a month cause of the dreaded broad mites.. I remember holding a pot outside.. (one of the last ones) and spraying it for like the 3rd time.. and thinking of throwing it up on to my neighbor's roof. LOL I looked at a whole tray of seedlings wondering how high I could get em if I did a granny shot. LOL
Yes, Brugs are a never ending learning process.. and no matter what, it's all worth it when a seedling blesses you with a bloom.. and then gives you a wonderful fragrance that takes all this away.
Thank you both for your help.
Are yours dark, dark green, Joan? Maybe it is a normal variant. That would be nice. LOL. Joyce, I tried to google that virus up again but do not have time to really look. I will look when I get home. I have a full day with 2 other Davers today and I am not ready to leave. We are going to get into lots of trouble. LOL
Hey ZZ are those plants pot bound and if so how bad?
Looks like some kinda mites to me...
Oh good for you Kell.. I hope you have sooo much fun!
Tonny, that is interesting! I have some that has spagnum in it.. along with a lot of other goodiez.. I am not sure if these particular ones are in that soil or not.. I will check the PH.. Good info! Thank you!
Phicks, thank you but I think they have been in these pots a couple of weeks.. they are only a month old. :)
Sherry, I think I'm leaning towards the beginnings of broad mites too..
We had a great time. Plant people always seem to have fun together.
I agree, interesting Tonny! I found this page to be interesting too, they have pics of different deficiencies.

Well I have spent almost 2 hours searching for the webpage that had the virus I had found. I just can't find it. I was sure I had saved it too. One thing is for sure, there are tons of viruses out there. It is amazing we have any plants alive.
If it is broad miites, hit hard! Those will make your life miserable if you have them inside.
I must get to bed, it is 4 AM. It is 32 degrees out right now. Tonite it gets down to 24 degrees, unheard of here. I am in such big trouble. Today I must wrap everything but my big brugs are goners I fear. And I have big trees of tibouchinas and they are goners too along with many other trees I have. Oh woe is me. It seems every 10 years we get a big killing freeze. Oh woe is me.
Kell,
I read on plant files that tibouchinas ar hardy to 20*....Is there more than one plant called tibouchina? This was a tropical/ tender perennial that grows to 15 ft. Maybe yours will be ok!
Carol
Wow Kell... what a nightowl... !! Do tell of your excursions yesterday with your fellow DGrs.. I wanna know what you bought.. or at least what was calling your name real loud.. LOL we want pics too..
Thank you so much for that link..
I got hit with Broad mites last year.. if that is what's goin on here.. I'm ahead of the game already.. at least all new growth is still normal.. Last year I didn't know there was such a thing as broad mites and everything was infected in a BIG way.. took me 2 months to get it under control...
Thank you
Joyceee
Keeping plants housed in my area, is almost a promise of mites...
kell, I sure hope you did not lose all of your plants. How does your yard look today? we are going to get that big freeze tonight or tomorrow. It has realy hurt as this year with the tempture going from 72 to 23 or 24.
Thanks for the link. It was a very good one I printed it for my garden book. Joan
My CA dog pals have spent the day winterizing everything they can, one says they are expecting as low as 15 degrees - they have not had a serious freeze in some time. We're supposed to get some weather too, but right now it's about 60 degrees with a nice rain that we badly needed. Good luck to all expecting a big chill tonight & over the weekend...
We're supposed to go into the 20's at night in San Diego County. Brrrrr!
However, it will be in the 60's for the play off game between the San Diego Chargers and the New England Patriots. Torn loyalties here. I'm from New England, but have lived in San Diego area since 1977. Ah, Heck ....... Go Chargers!
Wow.. that is cold.. I don't ever remember it gettig this cold in Stockton/Lodi area. This is crazy.. I think Stockton hit 20 this am! Says the wind chill is 17.. I am on the Stockton/Lodi border... I had 4 big brugs on the covered front porch and they are completely melted this morning. Whaaaaaaaaa One was a double seedling that didn't get a chance to bloom yet..
"Tonny, that is interesting! I have some that has spagnum in it.. along with a lot of other goodiez.. I am not sure if these particular ones are in that soil or not.. I will check the PH"
Thanks, Joyce. If you use tap water it can also affect the pH-value. Alkaline water (minerals as calcium and potashium etc.) always tends to raise pH in acidic soil types, but if that doesn' t help, you might have to add a bit extra calcium, when you feed the small ones :) LOL Back in 2002-03 I made a mistake in that area and a lot of my plants started to show signs of several deficiences. I used a spagnum based soil back there. It also went great, that is, untill I started to water the plants with rain water LOL I really have to say, that the leaves started to have some interesting colors. I was able to diagnose most of the deficiencies with help from Susie (Calalily) and then I started to treat the plants by adding, what was missing. Little was I aware of, that the soil allready contained an exceeding amount of the apparantly missing nutrients, but the low pH in the soil mix bound them so hard, that the plant roots could not steal a single bite LOL
Thanks, Kell, for the link. It is a nice and well worth to study website. Also I stumbled over a link to a site with many tocacco plants, that had defiencies. They look the very same way as would a Datura or a Brugmansia under the same conditions.

Thank you so much Tonny!! I have been thinking about this a lot.. So If I understand you correctly, the first step is to make certain the PH is okay? I haven't done that yet, but now I'm excited about it!
I see that according to the symptoms, calcium dificiency is one that describes the problems I've had pretty close.. but our well water is high in calcium.. so what your saying makes sense to me.. or I think it does. LOL
Even though it's a whole new area to research and learn.. (which I'm really loving) at least I'm finding out what some of the mystery symptoms were last year.. This is too cool.. Thank you Thank you!!!
It's allways mites first then check for other symtoms in my limited experience
Well Tonny, I tested the PH on the plant that had curled leaves all season last year... YOU ARE RIGHT ON THE MONEY! The Ph was really LOW!! Amazing.. cause just a few feet away it was neutral... I'm going to dig it up and pot it up with potting soil.. and continue to check the entire strip of soil to see what I can do to fix it.
This is what I read in the lil phamplet that came with the tester.
Too acid a soil means that the bacteria which decompse organic matter cannot live. Manganese and aluminum are so soluble in very acid soil that they become present in amounts toxic to plants.
Strong acidity also decreases niutrient availability, and plants may literally starve to death for one essential mineral nutrient while having so much of another that it poisons them. This becomes accelerated the more you fertilize.
So I remember my Isabella last summer getting curly yellow mottled leaves that were crispy at the edges. I thought it was a virus or insects.. I moved it to the back of the house and continued to fertilize and treated it for mites.. It lost all it's leaves and continued to die.
Today, I measured the soil... and amazing 4.5 Ph... Now it totally makes sense!
How that happened is a mystery to me.. but at least now I know what to check first.
I thank you so much for this valuable information!
Joycee
How do you quote like that, Joycee???
I'm going to try.
Quoted: I thank you so much for this valuable information!
Edited to say - it didn't work. I'd love to know how to quote, if anyone knows how, please advise. Thanks!!!

you type a square bracket [ quote ] square brackets
to end the quote you type [ / quote ] hopefully this works without showing quoted text...
PS No spaces
[/PS No spaces] Is this correct?? Where did you find the info, ZZ??
Edited to say, boo hoo, I flunked the test!!
This message was edited Jan 21, 2007 3:09 PM
I had to put spaces in for the purpose of demonstration, otherwise, it would not show. It is HTML tags I learned about when I built my website.
the square brackets need to be in front and behind the command
The square brackets with quote begins quote...
the / is a signal to stop.
[ ] starts the code and [ / ] ends the code

I did it!
Trying again.

Edited to say that it didn't work for me, again, duh.

Sherry, are you putting
in front and
at the end? You have to type it just like that with the word quote typed out and no spaces.
Take out the space I put between the word quote and the square bracket. I had to put it so it wouldn't turn it into a quote.
Thanks, Kell!! I finally got it to work on the 'test' thread, but it wasn't easy, whew...
Most internet programs have a history tab and you can find where you were .
I empty mine every 3 or 4 days [ I use Safari ]
I also try to bookmark every place I go and put in folder - folders I have are - check plants- check family - check camera - check computer - check misc .
Then later either trash them or put where they go . --
Okay, Zz's, I tried for 10 mins - what am I doing WRONG?
a message for you
Whoops it DID work! (Even old dogs learn new tricks!)
It doesn't work outside of Dave's Garden - I tried it in an email to my dtr, with no success; she's going to think me nuttier than ever.
just curious if you have solved the problem and what was your solution. was it mites or soil ph etc etc etc .
Sorry for my digression - my two cents worth experience has shown that when I have socked my Brugs with a big dose of fertilizer, the leaves turn bright greem and behave as above.
