What type /name of pine tree has the huge pine cones. I am looking for some real big ones. I would love 4 of the small trees.

Oh lord no. I have to pick up cones all the time. Pines are one of the messy trees you can have. I have at least 20 40-50ft pine trees and if you don't use your yard for much go ahead. If I did nothing I would have nothing but pine straw, cones and seedlings coming up everywhere. Given 10 years my yard would be a pine forest. I even have long leaf pine seedling themselves in my yard. That's the native pine here but my house was built on timber land that had a different pine tree planted. Lollybob pine? Forget how to spell right now. LOL. Not sure where the long leaf seeds are coming from. Maybe birds?

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

I think it's Loblolly, LOL

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Corey, send some of those birds over here, I love long leaf pine seedlings. They sort of look like stuffed toys or teddy bears when they start getting branches.

I had Loblollys that got huge cones in my last home. Here, the loblolly cones are tiny; it must be the soil.

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

We've got longleaf pine and also loblolly, but I now prefer (and love!) the name you gave them, CoreHHI! Lollybob! Love it! :>)

By the way, pine straw sells here for about 6-8 bucks per bale. That would be a good income for those of you with an abundance! Especially if you have kids or young teenagers that are willing to rake it up for ya!

$6 to $8 a bale???????

Too bad gasoline is high or I would bring you some. When I buy in bulk is it usually about $3.50/bale

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

yep, quite expensive here, but those are the prices in the "yuppie" garden centers. (Is 'Yuppie' not PC or is that san accepted word?) Anywhooo... I'm sure if bought in quantity the price would go down. But heck, right now, pine straw sells for $4-5/bale at the garden centers. Don't think I could ever pay that price though.

Wow I have lots of pinestraw at the coast. Gonna put some of it around the blueberry bushes.
And try to keep hubby from raking it up before spring.

I think I am looking for pine cones that are 6 to 8 inces high also if any one knows where I can get some of um.

I'll go measure mine. How many dozens are you looking for? LOL. Mine are probably 6 inches or so but I never thought to measure.

Talk about something that isn't PC! This thread reminds me of one of the joys of my youth--pine cone fights. These were snowball fights for kids who didn't have snow.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

I am afraid I will never remember Loblolly again; they will forever be Lollybobs now. LOL

Grantsboro, NC(Zone 8b)

I was raised in middle Georgia, we rarely had snow but lotsa pinecone fights. I got a black eye from one. That was hard to explain to my Mom.
