I have just ordered 7 ( yes, yes SEVEN!!!) new Brugmansias from Seed Sprout and Logee's, and I have never bought online plants before.
Can anybody tell me when I can plant them out? Are they able to take temperatures around 40-45 degrees at night? Or should I pot them up and keep them in a light but unheated garage, or put them inside?
I have always started a new plant from the nursery in spring or summer, and keep my rootlings inside until May.
Please let me know what to do,
Your Brugmansia slave,
Christie

I would email Brenda at Seedsprout. She is a wonderful person. She can tell you the best way to "store" your brugs. I don't think her GH gets that low at night.
She will answer you with great advice.
I called my Mom, who lives in Fremont, a few days ago. Her Brugmansias have frostbite damage, but they'll survive because they're planted in the ground and have an established root system. After paying as much as you have, I would keep them inside at least till they get over the shock of being uprooted and sent across the country. Kell lives across the bay from you. She could give you a better answer.
Welcome to the Brugmansia world.

I live in Livermore and bring my brugs. into an unheated greenhouse overwinter. I don't plant them back out until we get consisted night temps over 45 and day temps. at least in the high 60's. So sometimes it is March when they go out, but last year because we were so cold and wet in March, I didn't plant them out until late April. I would keep yours inside where it stays warm so that the roots keep growing, it will give them a better start once you plant them out. Just my opinion.
I have several large ones planted in the ground and large pots, they of course stay out year round. They lost all their leaves with the recent round of cold weather but the stems/branches are still fine. Another cold snap is on the way so I may loose more stem, maybe even to the ground but the in the ground ones always come back with new growth.
1st call and tell them to hold off on shipping till next week . They can freeze in the mail . It's going to freeze this weekend . They generally don't ship till the middle of Feb .first week of March here , but they may have changed their mind this year because it's been so warm .
I put all my burgs that are in pots in a homemade greenhouse [ 6x8x6 ] with a light bulb - always on - 2 - 4 foot fluorescence that come on at 3 p.m. and go off at 8 p.m. . [ that timing is because during the days , plants take in CO-2 and put off oxygen . At night they take in Oxygen and put out CO-2 . CO-2 is heavier than air so it kind of seeps out the cracks , holes , openings and kind of insulates the greenhouse . ]
I have 2 yellows , a frosted pink and a double white in the ground , but they all have a good root system . They do lose their leaves and some small branches .
Hope this helps .
thank you Tonyjr, for the greenhouse plan, I'll ask my husband to make me one.
The plants have already been sent... Yes, this fake pre-spring weather has confused us all...
Christie, you bought seven brugs? I hope you realize there's no turning back now....you're one of us, and we're keeping you!!! LOL!!
Christie You better ask for the green house before the bill comes!
What is that brug with the curlyque tendrils????????????
It is a Charles Grimaldi that I started from a cutting last winter. She bloomed non stop until the frost got the best part of her.
I have cuttings if you want.
