dallas area person needed to split canna order

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

has anyone ever ordered canna from brian or karchesky's? i am assuming that they send canna chunks that could be divided by 2 people. i am interested in ordering quite a few but know i can get more of the varieties that i want if someone else helps with this. if someone in texas would like to order with me please lmk. the closer that you live to dallas the better so we could save on shipping costs. i am going to post on the plant trading forum as well because i travel to miss. every year and could deliver plants in that direction as well. thanks. barb

mamajack: I wish I read this a month ago. I could have sent you a boat load. drat!!!

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

a boat load of canna? where are they now? lol. do you grow lots of different canna? esp. the newer ones? i am sorry i have so many questions but you have intrigued me with your reply. barb

Hello Barb! LOL! We planted several cultivars like 'Yellow King Humbert' a number of years ago and would have been delighted to send you any of the rhizomes we had when we redesigned that area and took them out. I could not tell you what all we pulled out. Alas, they are now in canna heaven.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

be ashamed. lol. i want so many of the newer ones......the whites and the zodiac series. they are incredibly high so i thought i could maximize this purchase by splitting an order. i think i have found a garden CLUB in monroe, la. who wants to go in and do this with me!!!! roflol. we ought to be able to get anything we want wouldn't you think?

I love cannas. When I first came here, 25 years ago form Southern Calif. I made a beeline for the cannas. Native Texans thought I was a couple of tacos shy of a combo plate for liking cannas. Cannas are colorful, tropical and carefree (if invasive). When I got weird looks from nurserymen, I would shrug and excuse my taste in flowers with, “I am from So. California. So, what do I know???” That would disarm them. fofl Many are quite beautiful.

I planted 200-plus cannas my first season here. The morning after planting them, I was horrified to discover 200 holes with 200 partially chewed rhizomes strewn all over the yard as if somebody had a frat party. It was at that very moment in my life that I ceased believing squirrels are “cute.” -

Hope you find a treasure trove of gorgeous, unusual cannas, and at great prices. Take care!

i had no idea squirrels would eat canna. my sister has had the pleasure (displeasure) of raising several baby squirrels after the mamas were killed. she had one that a dog attacked. he couldn't even sit up straight due to his injury so she could never release him in the wild. he hated my guts. and i am the one she always asked to feed him when she was gone. he would leap on my hand every time i opened the cage door and just rip it to shreds. started wearing welding gloves just to throw a sweet potato in. he loved my sister. would scramble all over her. me he hated and it got so i dreaded feeding time.

do californians grow canna a lot? you are right about texans and canna. some people have a few but almost no one has a bunch of different ones. and certainly not the white ones.

The folks from Horn Canna Farm from OK are usually at the Neil Sperry Show next month. Don't know if you can wait that long though.

little elm. my sister worked at the post office there and she loves those people.

That reminds me. My late mother had a friend in the early 50’s before See’s Candy fudge recipe was in the public domain. It was the creamiest most delicious fudge recipe in the world, (like the one today with marshmallow crème). Everyone wanted that recipe. Her friend wrote Sees and requested their recipe for fudge.

Some time later, she received an envelope in the mail with their fudge recipe …..along with a $50.00 invoice charging her for the recipe. That was a heck of a lot of money then. She dutifully paid the bill and was so indignantly infuriated, she practically gave that recipe to strangers! LOL&L That was how we came by the recipe years and years before it was published. I do not know where it is now, but it used marshmallows instead of the crème in a jar because back then Kraft only sold the regular marshmallows. It was unique because the recipes then called for granulated sugar (only.)

“do californians grow canna a lot?” – darned if I know. Who can afford to return? Actually Geraniums grow like weeds there and they are much like Texans think of cannas. Over the years I have come to somewhat respect geraniums.

Golly, I was not aware white canna is sacred. No, I don’t know of any sources, I wish I could help you. If for no other reason than to be like “Beverly’s Fudge Recipe” E-vile grin.

Good Luck! Happy canna propagating. :))

Barb, two years ago I ordered cannas from a coop here and they did well. I have ordered from kacherski and have LOVED my ermine, a white dwarf. Also bought from eflowergarden, the stuttgart canna, and it wasn't stuttgartt, but he has promised to make it right this spring.

I say I don't like them because they are "enthusiastic growers" but the fact is I keep buying/trading for them.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

nery, how "white" is that canna? who is eflowergarden? who did you buy from on the co-op? how well did it work? did they give yall any breaks? was shipping outrageous?

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

not chalk white, more like marshallow white. But somebody walking down the street would def. call it white. Ermine is relatively new so priced at a premium. Ck out GWD and look up Eflowergarden & Kacherski. very good places to buy stuff. The canna coop I'm talking about was 2 years ago. They had some problems but what I got worked great and growing fine, the hostess was "eyes". Barb, I don't remember the coop particulars, I must have thought it was cheap or I wouldn't have participated. I watch shipping costs like a hawk.

My gorgeous white TX star hibby is planted with the white canna. they are likely different whites, but I don't mind that too much. also have white calla in that spot, white butterfly bush.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

are you saying the hostess has a daves name of "eyes"? never saw that name. are they still a daves member so i could talk to them?

and what is GWD? i have seen karchesky's site but will look up eflowergarden.

I was looking to buy the Stuttgartt canna, but have been told it doesn't perform well here. It doesn't seem to like the heat and sill scorch in full sun. If anyone has proven this to be false, let me know and I'll reconsider finding a spot to tuck one in. I just planted the dwarf Princess Di this past year and it's done really well. Beautiful swirls of yellow, pink and peach.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

crowelli I have 1 young stuttgart which I planted in mostly shade and it did fine. I think anything over 1 hr of direct sun will burn the white on the leaves, but I personally had no trouble. They do get ratty like other cannas at season's end.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

nery, were you saying that "eyes of texas" was the host of the canna co-op? and nery i am going to dmail you.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

oops, s/b eyesoftexas. one word

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

So cannas grow in the shade? Maybe I need to actually click on those links I found for you...

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Marylyn, I was talking about the stuttgart, which is green w/ heavy white variegation. I think that all others, if place in less than full sun, won't flower as much. OTOT I'm not a canna expert.

Brian Williams, aka bwilliams on DG, knows a lot about cannas also. you could ask him about cannas in shade.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh, ok.. thanks, Nery. I'll revert back to interested bystander. LOL

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Vossner, thanks for the info on the Stuttgartt. I may have to try one of those. Glad to hear from someone locally who's grown them.
