daffodils blooming near Princeton, NJ

North Brunswick, NJ

Unbelievable. An educated guess says the photo shows 'Rijnveld's Early Sensation', which is a very early-blooming selection, but it's still hard to comprehend seeing these on January 7.

They are beautiful Ray. Enjoy! I remember some of the worst snow storms happen in Feb. and March there.

Amazing! What a sight for winter sore eyes! I wonder if the foliage will be able to stay on long enough to recharge the bulbs if temps return to normal?

rrog-- that is amazing! what is your zone?

North Brunswick, NJ

My part of the world - and those daffodils' - lies on the cusp between Zones 7 and 6. We saw a little snow today for the first time this season, which broke the old record (set in the 1870's) by a few days. We're now back to normal for temps, but it looks like we'll be back in the mid 50's this weekend.

Crazy.

rrog - Those are absolutely beautiful - I only have lots of tips coming up, no flowers even down here!

North Brunswick, NJ

Those daffodils' close proximity to heat-absorbing rocks and the nearby sidewalk, plus their south-facing spot, explain only part of the story. I think there must be a steam pipe running under the spot where those daffodils bloomed, and they must be the earliest-blooming daffodils known to mankind, and they must have been precooled to shorten the cold period most daffodils need to bloom. And someone cast some kind of spell or made a deal with you-know-who to get them to bloom in January.

It's a mystery, I tell ya . . .

I have daffs and crocus up, peonies peeking thru, along with lilys and pinks - not budded up yet, but soon, and it's currently SEVENTEEN degrees and sleeting - yep, they'll get stunted, that's for sure!!!

Manahawkin, NJ(Zone 7a)

My early sensation bloomed here in Manahawkin NJ the week of Christmas, and I am still picking them. They are a bit bedraggled due to some snow and below freezing weather. I had my husband photo them with his camera that shows the dates because they were so amazing. I must buy more of these for next spring. The first year I had them they bloomed in late January, and the latest was in March. Most of them are getting morning sun and they are close to a lake, but certainly not sheltered at all. A wonderful wonderful daffodil. A must have, I think.
