Pump shutdown with koi

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Hi all,

What is the consensus on how long the waterfall pump can be off in the Summer before it is dangerous to the fish? What happens when there are prolonged blackouts - up to a day or more? Do they die? Get sick? I have heard of people putting extra hydrogen peroxide in during outages to provide some needed oxygen. Does that actually work? For how long? How does the time of day of the outage affect things - mid-afternoon vs. ealry or late day or night? Thanks.

Hi Victor,

I would say that totally depends on the size pond. I have an 8000 gal. pond with 9' waterfall. Due to health problems with my DH my waterfall has been off most of the summer and it was extremely hot. I continued to do water exchanges of 1/3 of the pond a week and have not lost 1 fish other than to this big snake that had moved into my pond.

Thanks, Jeri. First - sorry to hear about your husband's health - hope things get better. My pond is 2500 gallons with about a 2' waterfall. Luckily, I have not had to consider snakes! Thanks again.

I don't know. When I do my exchange I set the water hose in the field bed from the top pond to the 2nd pond so there is a certain amount of water falling into the 2nd pond of about 18". I was doing it to try and get rid of some of the clorine and add some oxygen.

Thanks again Jeri. Maybe some others will share their experiences as well.
