It's been interesting (sad) watching the effects of frostbite on my hoyas from our ice storm and subsequent power outage of a month ago. Some never missed a beat - lilke the carnosas, pubicalyx, obovata. Most interesting (to me) is that, with only one or two exceptions (graveolens being one I can remember), all my small rooting and rooted hoyas survived - and even continued to put out growth! (for example the ones I just had received from David Liddle in October) Still others, like this callistophylla, took a month to bite the dust.....(no worry, I just got a new one!)
Edited to say that these were the hoyas I had in my house - under blankets for four days as the temps ranged from, as best as I could tell, 32 - 38 degrees.

Effects of frostbite on hoyas
Anyway, it's been interesting. We were lucky enough that the insurance company did call it a complete loss, so we will recoup $....to buy more hoyas with!!!! Here's what the final look was for the insurance guy - warning, the contents of this picture may be to violent for hoya/epi/tropical plant lovers.....
OH dear, Karen...the shot of the GH is TRAGIC!! (not the photo...the GH...heh heh). Have you looked at the roots of the hoyas that are tipping on the borderline? I was thinking that if some of the roots rotted, you might be able to save them by cutting the rotted root out and putting them in fresh medium?
Carol
That is like a clip from a horror movie! At least you've got some insurance money to start over! Buy yourself some nice big specimen plants.
Ann
Wow Karen that was a difficult picture to look at. I'm so happy about the insurance payment:-).
Blessings,
Awanda
Thanks all, and yes, it was difficult, but, we're moving on....and Thanks, Carol - I WILL try that - maybe I can save a few more!!
Horrible, I'm so glad that you get some money from the Insurance Company, makes it easier to swallow.
Where did you order your bubble wrap from, that is what's on the wall isn't it? I could be seeing things.. to much thera flu..
Tami - I ordered it from someplace on ebay last year. Not sure where - I'll look back and see if I can find the receipt.
We're getting a generator installed this weekend - YEA! No more disasters in the greenhouse!! 'Course, there's nothing in there right now to keep warm.....but just wait until next year!!
Hope you feel better!
Karen
karen, glad the insurance company came through. How long can you make yourself wait before you order new plants? I personally couldn't hold out 'till spring!
Karen,
I was truly hoping that it wouldn't be as bad as it sounded. That picture is awful!! It breaks my heart every first frost. I could just stay in bed for a week after the first frost. It's over with and now I have the spring and future plants to look forward to and you do too. Keep looking forward and if I have any cuttings you would like just LMK.
Jeri
Thanks Karen, I think I am on the road to recovery. That would be great if you can find where you purchased it, I do have another source, but it never hurts to shop around. The generator will be great, they come in handy, now get a extra frig and T.V. out there and if it happens again you can go stay in the GH, no worries about the plants then...:)
Tami - you're not too far off - Betsy's husband did get us a frig for out there!! No TV, though!
Mark - I've already ordered (and received) some Hawaiian babies! Thinking strongly of placing a "winter special" order, too!!
Thanks, Jeri - nice to have generous friends on this forum!!!
