It took a really long time and I still only got half way thru. I'll go back until I make it to the end. What a great thread the “How many Ponders are out there”. I thought I'd start another since the other is soooooo huge and would be hard for the dial ups. I have two small ponds and am expecting to build another bigger one this year. This is my birdbath/fountain pond. Kinda wraps it all into one. It is an Antique cement birdbath with a hole that runs thru it. We were helping friends move and they weren't going to take it with them so I brought it home. My son made me a concrete well approx 3 ft deep and 5 ft wide. He poured it with a pedestal in the center to sit my birdbath on. We put a pump in the bottom of the well and ran flexible pipe thru the well pedestal and the birdbath pedestal. The fountain is just enough to break the surface not disturb the birds and then the water runs over the edge and back into the well. I put a piece of driftwood in the bowl for the birds to perch on. Here is a picture of the bare bones.
I'm a Ponder, let me introduce my ponds.
This is my second pond. I call it a box pond. My husband built it from pressure treated 2 X 10’s.It’s about 5 ft X 4 ft. We put a preformed liner with ledges in it to hold the water but you could easily just use a rubber or plastic liner. We have it sitting on the Patio and really get a lot of enjoyment from it.
I tried to make a birdbath/overflow type pond like you have last year. I used a cheapie metal birdbath the did not quite work. I love yours it is perfect! I would not have though to put water plants in the bottom. You have given me inspiration to try it again this spring. The square one looks like it is just the right size to have your chair next to and enjoy> It looks like there are water hyacinths blooming in the picture. I just love those. The bloom reminds me of the eye of a peacock feather. Thanks for sharing. :)
Looks *great* Holly Ann - *now* I know why you haven't gotten more horses! I love that second picture, altho the 3rd one has a lot of appeal, too.
Thanks guys, I really love my ponds; There is a huge frog in my bird/bath pond. It’s the size of a baby bunny. But you can’t even get close to it for pictures. That pond and the 3 bird feeders close to it are my view from the living area. The big grassy area to the right of the pond is being removed and replanted. I put in 10 small Holly bushes that wrap around the corner of my back yard and will form a curved hedge between the stone driveway and the grassy area which will be removed and replanted with some type of flower bed. You can just see the first Holly bush in the first picture between the stone driveway and the grassy area.
Holly; Texas water lilies is a good source for water lilies as well as lotus.
I would wait with shipping across country a while yet but you get good healthy tubers and not as expensive as most nurserys.
For a small pond, ( i'm not sure about the shade part) but a marsh marigold is a pretty yellow also. They will stand higher than a water lily though. Just a thought...
Thanks I'll check them out. Beside the big pond we will be starting this year, I also have another water feature that will be up and running by June. It will be small and I was hoping that I could put waterlilies in that. I'll check out the marsh marigolds, don't think I've ever seen any and something smaller and higher would work well in my water feature. Not to mention my Dads pond. Thanks for the suggestions. Holly
