wow look at those red eyes. They are beautiful. Don't have the Inca's here

Me either Donna. Beautiful birds.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Aww....I love Inca Doves. I always have those wee ones here amongst the larger Mourning and White Wing Doves. Quite a sight. I actually rescued 3 featherless sibs once and raised them to adulthood. Such delicate little things. :)

Melanie

Santa Fe, TX(Zone 9b)

They are my favorite of the doves. They remind me of happy, playing children.

trois

The first birds I raised were Inca doves :)

Santa Fe, TX(Zone 9b)

Lucky you!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

When feeding my Inca youngsters...I would use two fingers...like a "peace sign." The babies would fit their heads between my fingers and peep for food...lol

Melanie

Santa Fe, TX(Zone 9b)

I have been jackhammered by a lot of baby birds. Hand feeding them is a very satisfying action.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lol trois, I've raised countless bird babies...but that was the oddest way that I had ever fed them. Those Inca youngsters wouldn't eat any other way....lol

Melanie

I know what ya' mean, Melanie. Those two Incas ended up with messy faces. :o I tried a little cap from an old plastic condiment bottle and it worked better. Knowing what I learned later, it was amazing those two lived. But they lived, and changed the course of my life.

Santa Fe, TX(Zone 9b)

We raised one Mourning Dove, and it never had the slightest interest in the outdoors. We tried to reintroduce it, but other than food, it's only pleasure was watching TV. We would set it on a paper towel and it would never move as long as the TV was on, except it's head. It lived about 4 years.

Now see, trois, you've been holding out. Ya' said ya' only raised one other wild bird and it was another jay. Spill the beans... errrr, the birdseed. ;-) Do you know if your dove was male or female?

I've probably cared for 1,000+ doves... A mourning dove was given to me by a woman who'd raised her and had her for two years. The (imprinted) dove lived freely in my bird care facility and would fly atop my head with twigs in its beak and try to build a nest in my hair. I was a bit surprised the first time an egg rolled off my head and fell splat on my lap.

Santa Fe, TX(Zone 9b)

I am old and forgot. The dove never laid an egg. Our Red Lorrie lays eggs frequently, and she talks to them, plays with them, finally breaks them. She has never sat on one.
Our Rainbow lorrie has never laid an egg. Both are the most playful birds I have ever seen.
Fairly good talkers. The red always tells us to "get out of my cage" when we clean it.

How cute! They sound like good company, too. 'old and forgot' = LOL

When the magpie I once had laid her first egg (on the aviary floor), one of the crows grabbed it and ate it. The next day, the magpie broke her second egg before a crow could abscond with it. As soon as she ejected (lol) her third egg, she very gingerly picked it up and hid it. I rushed in and took it, and still have it. I had a couple of her longest tail feathers but they disintegrated. Did you keep any blue jay feathers?

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

Trois: Your Red Lorrie "get out of my cage" sounds like a cranky old lady. Very funny.

Santa Fe, TX(Zone 9b)

No, we don't still have any Jay feathers.

The Red Lorrie is even worse when she gets mad at someone. She says in no uncertain terms,"get in your cage!"
Her favorite two toys are a ping pong ball and a wiffle ball. She will spend a good bit of time riding on the wiffle ball, like log rolling, then flinging her ping pong ball all over, with much excitement and noise.

My Red Lorrie. Her name is Jollie.

Jollie is gorgeous!!!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lol mag....I'm chucklin' away over here in Texas about your dove tryin' to build a nest on your head..lol... That reminds me of how my HUGE female iguana was most comfortable riding around on my head....back legs almost on each shoulder...lol...

Melanie

Pretty bird that Jollie!

She is a real charactor.

What lovely birds! I wish we had incas.

A couple of years ago, a lady called and told hubby that she had 2 baby ducks, in her backyard and they had been in the same place, all day. When hubby saw the little loves, he knew that they were not ducks. But, he brought them home anyway. The poor things were scratched all over and both had broken legs and flies had already placed eggs on them. We figure that they fell out of their nest and got the injuries on the way down the tree. After some major cleaning and medical care, these little guys took to us very quickly. Their names are Lovely and Dovely...really original LOL Dovely left home as soon as she could fly but Lovely stayed for 6 months. They still visit everyday and have had several nests.

They are Eurasian Collared Doves. They are larger and more gray than Mourning Doves and have a different call. They are similar to Turtle doves except larger. You can compare him to the Mourning in the seed dish.

Kim

This is Lovely. Dovely flew away as soon as she saw me.

Good catch, and great raising!

Albuquerque, NM(Zone 7b)

Awesome stories, guys! I was laughing good at Magpied's dove using her hair as a nest...
the visual with the egg... ROTFLMAO!!!!

Trois, beautiful shot of the Incas (we don't have any either :< ) and your Lorrie is a hoot!

It's amazing what this place can teach~ I had NO CLUE, Kim, that there was a differentiation between these three types of doves! After a closer look at my regular visitors, I saw some that resembled the Eurasian with the squared off tail and darker primaries (after researching some more) ~ Thanks!!

...And I was wondering why these guys were seemingly alot bigger than usual... (The old man asked me "what's with those white pigeons?") :)

Hi amylen, If your speaking of the daylilies I have around 150 different types, I love them but am no longer into that hobby. Now trying just to attract the birds, hoping to acquire some berry bushes.

Albuquerque, NM(Zone 7b)

It's amazing how our interests progress, isn't it? I aim to increase my experience with both...:)

North Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

Just wait a few years, Pell, collareds are spreading so quickly that they will be over the entire country soon!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

DH took this one of a White Wing Dove this year. Looks like blue eye shadow with pink shoes! We don't usually see them too often. But they have been around a long time this year.

I took this photo on a really chilly day last November. It looks to be a sea of brown...lol We have tons of White Wing doves here....year around as well as Mourning doves and Incas. I'd love to see a Collared dove. :)

Nice pics everyone! Sheila I really like that White Wing Dove.

Anyone remember "...just like a white-winged dove" by Stevie Nicks? I used to think it said, "just like a one-winged dove"... LOL

Santa Fe, TX(Zone 9b)

So far the White winged Dove has avoided my camera. Great pix.

Albuquerque, NM(Zone 7b)

I find it baffling how these sturdy guys can perch in the most delicate of uppermost branches...

The White Winged like to congregate here too Sheila! (I thought the eyeshadow was my camera LOL) There's younger trees in my yard where our neighbors have larger trees (cottonwood, maple) where the birds can look down and see when the food is coming... I like the "sea of brown" reference TXTurquoize... the moving mass of doves under the feeder or lined up along the fence! Great pics all!
Magpied, what song was that in? (Child of the 80's here) :)

Here's a White-Winged at the water cooler...

Nice pic amylen! I'm old enough to know that song :-(, lol.
