I'm sure its a weed.
grows on the side of my house on the south side
wondering what it is
I love this flower, anyone know what it is?
i see it in yellow too.
almost looks like some kind of portulaca....pretty for a weed though
I reckon portulacea too. Its an expensive plant over here though. lol
Looks like purslane. They're actually coming up with some very brightly colored large flowered varieties that are good for baskets, but the plain ones are sold here as ground covers.......they pop up everywhere!
Nice weed and I second azreno's opinion.

Funny you should bring up hanging baskets.
I dug it up and planted it in a basket.
I have so much of it on the side of the house. that I just couldnt resist.
it looks great when they are all in bloom.
I felt silly digging up what otherwise seems to a weed in these parts but
I thought it was so pretty. blooms like crazy in the summer.
This also just showed up
I think I planted some of these last year.
Must have dropped a bulb in the yard and it just now
started growing.
Its on the edge of the property so i haven't noticed it .
went out this afternoon and noticed something white in the distance and low and behold this little beauty was there. LOL
Wow! What a strange time for that to bloom! Very pretty.
yeah thats what I thought.
Wow that is pretty.
I used to have a basket of that back in Florida. Mine came in a variety of colors. Can't remember what it was called, though. I just bought a packet of seeds and put them in a hanging basket and had the most beautiful flowers...till I had surgery and couldn't water it for a while. Lost all my garden and lawn that year.
GG that is purslane-most likely one of the Yubi series and the one you have is my favorite color of all of them! They are very easy to start from cuttings if you want more of them-3" cuttings will root w/in 2 weeks. Keep pinching them back. They love it really dry.
ohhhh
thank you.
anyone know why this just grows on its own in my yard? is it a weed here?? I've seen it in other yards.
Its funny it only grows on that side of the house and no matter how many times
you cut or dig over there, they come back.
I have them in yellow and this color.
thanks for the info on the cuttings, although I dont think i need any tons of it grows out in the yard . right along with the grass.
I'll have to take a pic. Its really pretty.
Purslane is the Nickname for Portulacea.
So there the same thing.
Except that Purslane is the Nickname for many plants.
Mike
Actually Mike, purslane is in the Portulaca family, but it is much different than the ordinary portulaca that you germinate from seed. This plant has a much thicker stem, with larger, thicker leaves and grows larger than the portulaca. There are different series of the purslane like the Yubi single and dble series. Purslane is also more drought tolerant than portulaca.
I don't even grow portulaca anymore for landscapers as purslane is a more desirable plant in the landscape. You can only purchase purslane as a "liner" plant from liner growers. They don't sell seed for it as is possible for portulaca
Purslane is downright invasive here--I'm glad the neighbors don't plant it. The hot pink blooming ones though I swear would be great under a blacklight--lol
Tiger, Purslane isnt a real name for a plant only a nickname for many plants
Portulacea is a Latin/true name for the family of these plants.
The plant above will be called Portulacea ???Something. And its nickname will be Purslane.
Hope this link helps if you do a search for purslane it brings all the portulacea types up.

Cheers for now

Guardangirl: Here's a link for the Portulaca in your yard ... it is pretty and very easy to grow. It does make a pretty container plant!

yup thats them.
I wonder where they came from?
anyhow I'm glad i have them they sure are pretty.
thanks for the link
SPACE.... must have been little green men planting them!
They are pretty, could have been seeds blown from a neighbor's or dropped by birds. The past couple of years we have had the yellow weedy one growing in our lawn, which is the invasive one, I think. But, so much stuff is invasive here in Florida, we have to really watch what we plant, some things just take over!
Lin
I'm not sure but i think it can grow from leaf cuttings as well. So might be from a small piece of leaf dropped somewhere. Depends on the type though i think.
Mike
I know it can be propagated from stem cuttings .... probably leaves too!
I love to put it in hanging baskets around my pool in spring/summer time!
Lin
This reminds me of a discussion I had with someone in Lowe's. I was checking out with a big tub of portulaca. The lady behind me asked me what it was, and I said moss rose. She said "No its not, its portulaca!" I tried explaining they were the same - she couldn't be convinced. Decided to let it go - I like to pick my fights! LOL
That particular pot of portulaca was purple, I added a couple of miniature zinnias to it (yellow) and it's still blooming away almost two years later. The combination is gorgeous and one or the other is always blooming - really spectacular when they are both in bloom.
Portulacea is a great plant ! Mom grew it every year in rock garden beds when we were kids ! I've grown it here too. Bought small pots at Lowes years back. One pot I planted in a hanging shallow like bird feeder hanger . It did not hold much soil but the plant bloomed each day. It did have to be watered a lot in this container .
PS it can be grown by seed and it re-seads . Plants use to fount easy at Lowes and HD. It grow well every where and yes like Lin said great in hanging baskets around the pool area !
I get asked 10 times a day if i have any japonica for sale so its a sore subject. Not sure if this translates well into america but basically all the old ladies have picked up on the word japonica. They don't seem to understand thats the last part of a name. So it would be like ringing direct enquiries for the phone number of John and not knowing his surname. I could name dozens of plants with japonica in the name and 3 that are the most commonly asked for when they say japonica.
I understand its hard to understand. Naming of plants can be very confusing.
It doesnt help that english and latin have been mixed to give plant names also that some common names are there latin names.
Once mastered it all becomes clear.
Still Purslane, Portulaca or even mose rose, its a nice plant that often tolerates harsh conditions. But rewards with lots of bright flowers.
Well worth growing.
I'll stick to my mezzies though.
