Confused Birds

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

The weather being as it is I wonder if the poor little birds are confused? I swear I saw a robin not long ago and they are not due back yet.
I love the birds and feed them some during the winter and try like the dickens to keep some water for them (not easy). I just hate to think that this warmer than usual weather will hurt them in some way.

Manybirds follow the food South, and as snow covers the food, and the supply is diminished, they move on to the South. They also require open water. Many leave only when it is necessary.

Some robins do winter here.

I saw a blue heron last week. Kinda late for that, isn't it?

I think so.

As long as the water isn't frozen and the herons can catch some fish they will be fine. They tend to stay just south of the ice line in winter.

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

I'm not sure where Noblesville is, but there are lots of robins who summer and winter in our area and also some robins who migrate down from Canada who have stopped here for now, at least.

We had the Cincinnati area Audubon bird count last week and we had thousands of robins in the count. Some speculated since the ground was not frozen and worms were still available we have many more than usual.

They are fun to have around.

We live in nothern Indiana and the Robins have always as long as I can remember migrated to warmer climates. I didn't want to get to technical just an observation and thinking out loud.
