Hi All, I had just come in from putting some mealy worms in the dish and in almost no time the CW shows up.
Its very windy here today and you can see some of his little feathers being blown forward.
Carolina Wren
Great series :) Their song is so sweet - did you know they mate for life? :)
Dea
No Dea I didn't. I haven't done much reading on them. I love their songs too, they can really go on for a long time.
We had a pair nest on our screened porch last spring. Built the nest on a shelf where I kept some tools and pots and such. They would come in and out through a hole at the bottom of the screen that a squirrel had made trying to get to some bird seed. It was fascinating to watch them coming in and out bringing food for the babes. But, during that time, those wrens owned that porch. If I tried to sit out there for any length of time, they would screech constantly. I'd have to turn away from and pretend not to watch before they'd come in or out. Plus, I couldn't use any of my tools! My husband wants me to patch the hole but I'm secretly hoping they'll come back. :)
Deb
Thats so funny Deb! I'm sure they felt quite protected there.Sounds like one of my wild born cats, as long as he's not facing you he'll let you pet him.
What a cute series of shots! It looks like it was windy there in NJ today? I love the little flip in the ndck feathers in #1.
Very windy some gusts were making all the feeders go sideways. Of course the squirrels were loving that with alot of the seed winding up on the ground.
Ha ha! Smart squirrels! That's right... I forgot about how thhey like to nest in odd places and LOVE to nest near humans. I alwys wondered if that was because they felt being close to humans helped keep animal predators away. Here is a wren nest in coil of rope in my firend Ingrid's garange.
They really do go all over, thats cute!
My sister in NJ had a pair of wrens that nested in their garage every year. Every morning they scolded until she would go and open the garage door. One summer when the babies started getting adventurous, one of them fell out of the nest and plopped right into the chute of their big chipper shredder!!! She made her DH come home from work and take it apart so they could get the baby out lol. The baby was fine and they came back again the next summer. The chipper shredder didn't fare so well though. Apparently it was a whole lot easier to take apart than it was to put back together. It's still in pieces in various locations in the garage of their new house.
Oh my goodness thats a great story but how did your brother in law feel about all that? I applaud your sister!
He's really good about stuff like that. Plus he's his own boss and his business is housed in an old school in walking distance of their house. Lucky baby wren!
Aww thats very sweet. Thanks for sharing that with us.
wow...none of you were exaggerating when you said that carolina wrens have affinities for home features when it comes to nesting. They are resourceful.
lol, MySharona, I was thinking it was considerate of you to put a halt on watering your petunias to accomodate the birds. lilyfantn, of all shredders, it's a good thing the nestling ended up in that specific one...whew.
