Dark Eyed Junco's

Marlton, NJ

I only see these little guys in the cooler months but I just love them. They look like flying Oreos chasing each other through the yard.

Happy New Year Everyone!

Pell, you also beat me in being the first to post, but that's okay. I'm just happy we got our bird forum.

Pelletory - I've never seen that species of bird here in on the east coast of Florida. Cute little fella! :-)

Marlton, NJ

I don't know their range off the top of my head but they like colder weather. I never see them in the summer.
Its hysterical to watch 50 of them flying around at one time doing loopey loops etc., the Oreo superfast rollercoaster.

Kingsport, TN(Zone 6b)

What a sight that must be! I don't see juncos very often here in Tn. either. What a sight 50+ must be flying around!

Marlton, NJ

Yes they are very sweet and I enjoy the time I have them in my yard.

I love the Juncos, too, except that they are the harbinger of winter!!!

I wish my attached picture was more clear, but you get the idea - a Hairy Woodpecker and a Flicker sharing the dinner table.

Murmur your so lucky to have the Flicker; I've never seen one in person. I have the Downys and the Red Bellied Woodpeckers. I almost forgot, I did see a Yellow Bellied Sapsucker but wasn't able to get a good shot of him.

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

The flickers are wonderful, Pelletory - I have seen as many as a dozen in the little Alder grove right by my house! Sorry if I hijacked your thread - it looks like maybe a new thread for each bird variety? At least so far.

Marlton, NJ

No don't worry about it because I was thinking about how to do each species anyway.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Coo. Already a bird I have never seen before. Are Jungo's a cool weather bird?

Blythe, CA(Zone 10b)

Pell: Those yellow saps are hard to get a picture of. I've had one in my tree for almost a month, but so high up there, even when I get a picture it's not very good.

Yes they are star.

Kingsport, TN(Zone 6b)

I love yellow bellied sapsuckers. I wish I had a picture to post. I always think of them as woodpeckers wearing "Kabuki makeup" lol!

Blythe, CA(Zone 10b)

that is so funny! Look way up high in your trees, they hang out there.

Pell,

Love the Juncos! Thanks for sharing.

Marlton, NJ

Your welcome; they are cuties. Heres another pic.

I haven't gotten any photos of the Junco yet. I always see and/or hear it, but no pics yet. They're so adorable and sweet!

Great pics Pell!

Juncos will feed from my feeder but prefer staying on the ground near my feeder. Love to watch them moving about after a fresh snow. They will stay near a lilac bush near our deck when it's very windy and peck at wind blown seeds to eat.

I've only seen Junco's feed on the ground, not at feeders.

Savannah, MO(Zone 5b)

You know Marilynbeth I have them feed on my feeder some but it is a flat feeder on the corner of my deck. My other hanging feeders get juncos only on the ground feeding on fallen seeds. Some other birds I get are much more aggressive to get there food. Juncos seem more laid back just hopping around on the ground looking for food.

I love the way they kick their little feet at the ground trying to stir something up.

I have been surprised to see them on a number of my feeders.

I finally got some pics of these guys! :) (I think they are ~the Western variety)...
I noticed too that they would pick around on the ground alot but would fly up to my shabby chic feeder to chat with the house finches as well...

sorry I don't take the straightest pics sometimes...

Thanks Amylen! Their real cute. This is the Oregon Junco, right? Nice pics!

Thanks Pelletory! You're right :) I'm learning so much here~

I've seen the dark-eyed juncos for the first time this year. Usually 4-6 at one time. I just watched 3 take a bath in puddles from the recent rain. Then they moved to a block to dry off and preen. They are so cute. Went to get the camera, but they were gone. Becky

Millersburg, PA(Zone 6b)

I only see Juncos in the winter and a a couple the other day. When it snows good and deep they are all over the ground around the feeders. They are 'clown' birds. They don't walk - they 'pop'

Savannah, MO(Zone 5b)

I was looking in one of my bird books and I read there is a White-winged Junco from the Black Hills. Wondering what they might look like. They are a rare sight for most of us. Juncos have a pinkish beak to go with their pretty colorings.

That sounds interesting, I just checked the site "All About Birds" and don't see it listed. Would it maybe be under another name?

Heres one of my little guys this afternoon; they sure do love the thistle seed.

I'm sad. While hanging a new feeder this afternoon, we found a poor little dead junco. He had flown into the window. Awwww....... We gave him a proper burial.

Amelyn, what a great feeder you created - I love something unusual (however, I never think of them myself!). That one offers delightful perches along with the food source. Gives unique opportunities for photos as well. Nice job!

North Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

Awww so sorry about little junco. We have a quite a few during the winter. They are such a joy to watch.

Albuquerque, NM(Zone 7b)

Hi Murmur- Thanks! I'm a big fan of wrought iron! What else to do with a plant stand with no plant :) Much appreciated!

Fleurs, so sorry to hear about your junco ~ It's sad to lose our flying friends to window death :(

Cuckoo, check out this page (I didn't want to breach copyrighted images), I think the White-winged is the last pic as you scroll down~ I wanted to see too :)

Oh, check out the Red Backed one just above it. Very neat looking.

Savannah, MO(Zone 5b)

amylen2620 I enjoyed the junco info. and read it all. Thank you. I'm seeing lots of juncos now and watched them today hoping to get the little birds to hold still long enough for some closeup pictures! There is a variety of color variations and they sure are fun to watch.
