My son had to run out on an errand (in his car) and when he came back he told me that I had a butterfly flying around in my van. I thought he was kidding. He says, "No mom, I'm not joking. Go see for yourself." So I did. Sure enough, there was a Monarch flying frantically around inside my van trying to get out around the back window. LOL! So I lifted the hatch up and out it flew to freedom!
I've seen it all !!!!! LOL
Remember me telling y'all about the cats I picked off the milkweed plants at HD and brought home. Well, apparently one escaped in the short time I drove from HD to my house before I managed to unloaded the plants to my back porch. I know it was one of those cats because the rest of them eclosed yesterday and today. 14 so far not including the one in my van. Too dang funny!
And if that isn't funny enough...... I was weeding (yes! in December) around the backyard gardens yesterday and when I came inside last night my dh told me to hold still. (I thought it was a spider or other bug that he was getting off me.) It was a baby Monarch cat in my hair. LOL!
I think I've seen it all .......
LOL Becky! It's amazing you have been driving around with a chrysalis somewhere and it wasn't knocked off or stepped on.....way to go! And the one in your hair.....funny!
ROFL Becky. Glad it survived. I have a sulphur and a Gulf Frit flying outside today, is very warm
I can't believe the heat inside that car didn't kill it! At least, I assume in zone 9B it gets hot!
Linda - Luckily, it had been a little cooler (70's) and had been raining the day the Monarch eclosed. So the sun wasn't shining on the van. Which is probably what saved it. I guess when they are in their chrysalis the heat doesn't bother them. But of course, once they emerge they would get dehydrated and die. Fortunately, my son saw it, otherwise I would have found it dead in my van. I have seen a lot of Monarchs that don't make it and the only thing that seems to be consistent is the weather. (Rainy or very, very humid when they go into the chyrsalis stage. Probably bacteria or fungus gets them at that vulnerable stage.)
That's a good one Becky!!
In your van, in your hair, Monarchs Monarchs EVERYWHERE!!
Too h-a-i-r-larious!! roflmbo!!
You are ....... putting me over the edge, Deb!
I'm cracking up at your poetry! LOL LOL LOL
Grabs Becky with a piece of dental floss, and ties her up to the *edge*
lol.. what are friends for, ....anyway?
:-D
(Been tied up myself somewhat, ...in daves forum over getting a Birdwatching forum.) Just so ya know.
Deb, I have been reading the birdwatching thread, and felt I was too tired to get envolved!! It looks like it would be a real touchy subject with some. Hope you can get it going. I bet Trois would like to have some input, don't know if he watches DG forum or not.
Sorry about the out of place comments....directed to others.
Yes Becky, Debnes can be quite amusing I am finding out too! I really like the dental floss she grabbed for you just now so you don't fall over the edge!!
The Monarch in the van is just so cool. Guess nothing stops Mother Nature when the time is right!
What birdwatching thread?
Deb - Thanks for the laughs! I can always count on you to bring me to my senses! lol (What senses?! They were gone years ago. LOL)
It took me a while to find the Bird Forum discussion. I meant to get on it sooner. Probably good that I didn't. I tend to get fired up about all the fuss and nonsense going on by a select few folks. Ridiculous, IMHO! I hope it's a go soon.
Fly_girl - Here's the thread discussion link: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/680518/
Sorry Roxie, I have been busier than a one wing butterfly last few days. It got kinda hot and I was on a refrain from mentioning it until things cooled down. (Didn't want to invite you all of you peaceful folks into a storm, after I saw where it was going at the time.) It flared up pretty quick, and I waited to say something about it until I was sure it had died down. Hopefully it has now, and maybe we are still on the way to at least having some sort of a special place to share our Birdwatching experiences here at DG.
As Butterfly gardeners we get to the very neucleus of a 'true ecosystem', and of course we don't want to kill anything that chances into our garden, even a non-native... Good grief, most of us have deep roots in Europe, and all over the world etc. What is a native? Anyway?? I am a Texan through and through from 3 generations back, (DAR)~ Yet I see how migration and *other means* have brought us all to one place. I rather enjoy what I witness right here and now. I am a simple gardener, not their Creator or otherwise. (Yikes!)
Take today! It is a gift!
That's why it is called the present!
Becky said it best there:
the BIGGEST threat to birds and all wildlife are humans.
Thank you Beckaroo!! You were right on time! Thanks for posting the thread url!
One more thing I saw in my backyard yesterday morning: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/680798/
Happy New Year Hugs ALL !!!!!
Deb
Deb - My timing on the Bird thread must have been divine intervention because I had looked for it for days after Pelletory told me about it. (Remember ... I'm a dumb newbie here on DG and still have a hard time navigating my way around this HUGE multi-feature website.) And the "Hey, Stella" thing was a mistype on my part. It should have been Stelco. LOL! Another divine intervention???? Had to be!
I have to laugh because in EVERY case where there is an invasive element brought into the U.S., it seems that humans are to blame. I think that it is unreasonable to erradicate any living creatures and plants because of OUR own stupidity. I know that every living thing has it's purpose here on earth as designed by God. Who are we to decide what lives and what should die. Which is now making me feel very guilty for killing milkweed bugs and mesquitos! LOL
Anyway, I hope it blows over and we get a Bird Watching Forum. That would be sooo awesome! When is Dave going to make a decision about this?
Well put Becky~(Your wings are very sparkly! hehe)
And yes our agreement and spirit together blew the doors off of the thing. You done good girl!! Angels are camped about you (knew dat), and butterflies in your hair! Absolutly perfect timing Beckaroo! Great typo!! Divine indeed! God bless ya!
There are so many lovely people here. Everyone can have an off day, or even an off year for that matter. What's a little time to witness a struggle when we know the greater part of any struggle is the eclosing (from a comfort zone), and finding our freedom to fly over borders and boundaries. Defying gravity is no small matter.
Marvelous!!
It seems like heated disputes can happen in any forum. I've seen it happen over feeding deer to planting non-natives.
I would love to see a bird watching forum......it would be great to see pics of birds that aren't in my area. I hope it happens.
Geez, what's so hard to understand about the word watching?! Those threads exhaust and frustrate me. There's no end to the argument and it just steals everyone's time. I'm a big fan of my time so the only time I "waste" it is watching my butterflies and birds.
Well put Paige!
