Well...guess this is the beginning of recovery..from being moved inside.. I'd strung the remains of fall from three pots of Passifloras along the white nylon line which was hung in my hallway.. they have been releafing..and now the first flower... the first flower of 100's for the winter season. hopefully... And the Happiest Of New Years to All..
Oh.. theflower was Clear Sky.. Gordon NYC
It's Passiflora Time In The City
This is the hall way.. a single fixture was replaced with abit of track lighting.. and Four 150 watt heads to help out the 4'x 4' stairway skylight.. and the clear 2' x 2' ladder hatch skylight .. now ...for the New Year...water a few times a week.. fight the bugs.. and enjoy the hoards of flowers... Gordon, nice setup. Happy New Year to you too!
Kyle
Very cool!
But, how do you fight the bugs? I don't have nearly as many plants as you do indoors, yet I'm spraying for aphids almost daily (dunno where they are popping up from). Last year I used systemics and killed as many plants as bugs, so now I'm gun shy - only little soapy water is used this time.
Victoria
Kyle...well thanks..
Victoria...wellyestheydohaveawayofhatchinginonespot...if you getthem then you stand a shot at them.. once they are dispursed overeverywhere... it's more work... Gee I hateto say it.. soapywaterisn'tgoingtogivethem the knockoutpunchto ridyourselffrom them... IMHO...ya got to have some posion.. something to dispatch them no doubt about it.. andpolutethe area so any new ones die also.. inside...well Ispray and leave in the morning for the day..after wiping up any dripping.. I use a coctail of perhaps 4 deadly killers..two ofthem are systemic two are contact killers... and I rotate myfloramite in between.. with the phermone Stirup has to get them to the death on their own.. but they are fast to reappear...
I was looking at the flowers on my Clerodendrum bungi.. and went for the camera.. I took the picture..went and downloaded it to the computer...then as I was viewing it... I saw these little black bumps on the flower...and thought to myself they looked like bugs...going to the plant I see the entire flower head was awash in these black aphids.. I swear they hatched in the time it took to shoulder the camera and shoot.. onceIsee them.. andspray...thye are knockedway back...reapplication before I notice them again... and then when I notice anymore have arrived or have hatched out... the flower that gave them away.. I have endless respect for gardeners who haul their plants inside for the Winter. I had something of a taste of this two years ago when we had two hurricanes and a couple of freezes threaten.
There is nothing more uncomfortable then 10,7,3,1, gallon pots packed rim to rim - with a skinny path down the middle of it for advancing from point A to B.
Seed flats on every horizontal surface.
Heating mats, trays of 4" and 6" pots...
After the hurricanes came and went, everything outside was like salad in a blender.
New philosophy:
Nothing worth less than 100.00 per 4" pot inside. (losing weight should be this easy).
Adjust philosophy to accept mass destruction or meltdown. (Ah! The Jade Vine is frozen! Yay!)
When plants become flying missles, get into the aerodynamic wonder of it. (WoW! The banana tree is stuck in the side of the house like a javelin! Too cool!).
Nary a pot moved...nary a sprout relocated.
BTW, I'm 57 years old. If you are 57 years old or older you will be laughing, nodding your head and agreeing to all of this. If you are less than 57 years old, more like fortyish, you will be horrified and find me wasteful and silly.
If you are less than 25, you are probably growing contraband indoors, don't know what a Jade Vine is, nor do you care. :-)
Anyway...Hats off to the northern indoor gardeners! :-)
Elizabeth, you are hilarious! You had me laughing out loud at my desk!
"If you are less than 25, you are probably growing contraband indoors, don't know what a Jade Vine is, nor do you care. :-)". What a hoot!
Gordon, you are an inspiration to us all. It's always a treat to read your posts.

Gordo... Well...giving them up is one way.. but if you have personal weight concerns... hefting a160 pound [72.7k.] plant on ones shoulders.. [ slightly more than my bodyweight ] and then climb or descend a15' ladder ..oh you really need one hand for the ladder too.. but at 57 you might understand that already.. be careful.. as giving up the moving and lifting is no way to keep it keeping trim ..[ use it and loose it ] and after [ and or before] such an overweight move.. you too might be looking for some self medication homegrown or otherwise.. I just ordered my Jade vine yesterday... [ from Logees] that's the old persons vine right ... well I hope to keep it from freezing here..I just love it's coloration .. how big do they get for you there.. Oh..Gordo... I've sent a research party into GulfPort..a real lovely city..in hopes of relocating the garden there... from your posts.. it seems like it might be a wee bit too far north to be worry free... do the tropicals have to come inside for you there usually..
Erick..well thanks... I do keep things and tropicals alive and growing.. through out the winter.. as I have no cool place for dormantcy... I don't necessarly reccomend this for the faint of heart or body..but I suffer no seperation blues from the gardening.. only twice the work as they need outside..
PICTURED IS THE SECOND INSIDE BLOOM FROM CLEARSKYS.. the martch is on
All the best there... Gordon
