rice paper plant seed collecting

Gold Beach, OR(Zone 9a)

I have been watching some huge trees and need to know about the seed collecting. They are in bloom, at what point is the seed ripe and what does the seed look like? Any help appreciated and if I can figure it out, will have lots of seed to share.

That's just plain creepy, Mike. LOL

Hi again, Rebecca! ;)
I was wondering do you know another name for the rice paper plant? I couldn't find it in PF, except for a purple kind, which I looked up on GIS: http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=Peristrophe+speciosa&btnG=Search+Images

Is that the type of plant you're referring to? Or similar?

Thanks,

mike
can i send plants to you in that country?

I think we are talking about Tetrapanax papyriferus

Gold Beach, OR(Zone 9a)

The botanical name is Tetraparax Papyrifer. Mike, the last time I checked for seed, it was still in flower and quite "fluffy". But there are lots and lots of them. Sure wish I could send you a seedling, there are lots of those too. Some of these plants are very old and pretty big trees. One had fallen over, years ago, and is about 3 feet off the ground, growing almost pararel to the ground, it has a huge trunk and the leaves are at least 3 feet across. I need to remember to take my camera and get a picture.

I don't think they will get that big here, ever! The weather here is just so Grey! I need to see the sun again soon... I think i'm going blind!

Hi Mike,
We had sun today, it was so nice. But we also had some frost. I hope the frost did not damage my rice paper seeds. These plants are very, very old. At least 20 years. They are tucked in between some buildings so they have shelter from the wind. And they did live through the severe frost we had in 1990. Now somewhere I heard if the frost comes too soon it will damage the seed. Hopefully they are protected enough and it really was not that cold, 31 degrees.. I will check in the next day or two.
