Oh No...Snow!

Graham, WA(Zone 8a)

Good morning to all.

Just joined the forum this morning after my discovery of it last night. Looking forward to all the good info available and others to discuss gardening with.

Wow, snow. Who would have guessed. I'm out in Graham, Washington. A five acre plot with half of it left natural. I have about a quarter acre for my garden, garden cottage, fruit trees and such. It can be quite a handful. I have been working on it pretty much daily since the "wind storm", rebuilding my greenhouse (with PVC), cleaning up beds, gutters on the cottage, etc. Snow will have me holed up in the house with my knitting today...maybe a few seeds to be ordered.

What is everyones gardening agenda for January or ? Looking forward to getting to chat with you all.

My January Agenda is to finish the on line webpage, continue to finish the catalogue, order seeds and just ordered some '07 intro iris.

No weeding here, too wet.

Welcome aboard, I too am starting a knit cap for a 16 year boy...his school colors. Been a long time since I did circluar needles.

Iris, love hats on circs. School colors, fun! Is he in HS? Your online catalogue is for?

We had a few dry-enough days to do a bit of weeding and I was hoping it would have been like that today, as the weatherpersons on the t.v. said sun this afternoon. LOL. Yep, need the sun to melt that snow.

I have gone through my seeds, weeded out the oldies, wrote down my needs and will order just about four packets today. I order my veg seeds from Territorial Seed down in Oregon. They have been good for me so far.

I hope my garlic survives all the wet weather from November, the wind and snow from December. I usually plant in October to harvest the following summer, with fingers crossed, it won't all be rotted away.

Happy knitting!

Where is Graham?
Territorial Seeds have great seeds. I have had such good luck with good germination with both veg. and flower seeds.

Hi BonnyBelle and welcome to Dave's! You might want to consider adding irises to your garden if you don't have them yet. Another good source for seeds from Oregon is Nichol's Garden Nursery. I get a lot of my veggy seeds from them. You can google for the website.

There are many features to Dave's Garden but one of the most important that you will want to pay attention to if you do mail orders is the Garden Watchdog-- it is located on a tab at the top of the page. Another is to customize your homepage with your favorite forums-- just click on the upper right when you are on the main page of the forum and henceforth it comes up on your homepage so you don't have to go looking for it each time. Also the "watch thread" feature, for example just above your first post if you click on "watch thread" then you will get a notice on your homepage that a new post was made. With these and many other conveniences on this site you can end up spending way too much time on the computer!!

Also, if you have any troubles/questions about the site a good place to post is the forum called "Dave's Garden" located on the right and down on the main forum page. Often Dave himself will respond.

i love territorial seeds but i hate their shipping costs..they dont even give me a break for shipping a short distance..

Pamsue,
You can find Territorial Seed packages in the nurseries for plants. Try that.

DaisyRuffles...Graham is about 12 miles south of Puyallup or 15-18 miles southeast of Tacoma. Not a town, just an area of unincorp. Pierce County.

Thanks for all the info. on Dave Forums, appreciate all the help.

Hmm, no iris' in the garden yet...must look into that.

Hi Baa...welcome to DG. I'm just a skip and a jump from you here in Sumner.

Gosh, I haven't even started to think about January gardening with all the other activities going on (we're working on a business startup in Federal Way). However, my DH (devoted husband...LOL!) has already started thinking about the garden...he ordered some pepper seeds from Pepper Joe's this week.

I suppose I should order some vermiculite as I'm out and will need it for starting seeds in the greenhouse in the Jan/Feb timeframe. I'll be growing perennial flowers; need to fill out the flower beds and start some new ones. Also, will be doing a veggie garden again this year...nothing beats homegrown salad makings! :-)

Welcome BaaBonneyBelle! You have happened upon the most wonderful gardening website ever. Congratulations! It isn't Publishers' Clearinghouse showing up on your doorstep; but close, real close. Ask anything without fear and someone will answer or work to help you find an answer. Simply put: Dave's Garden and its members are the nicest people on earth. Right?

If you need any plants for your Cottage Garden plans just click on my name and send me a Dmail. I am ridding my relatively small tilled spaces of some perennials of 'cottage' nature to make room for more dahlias: my passion. Don't forget to check out the Cottage Garden Forum if that interests you.

Do you have sheep? Do you spin their wool? I envy you down there in Graham. I'm sure I've been to Graham on the way to Mt Rainier, or at least passed close by it.

Welcome Baa BB, and everyone, please be careful on the treacherous snow and cold of winter. I'm in the foothills well east of Issaquah and the first thing I saw on the commute this a.m. was two highway patrolmen with lights blaring, flares on the freeway and an upside-down absolutely mangled car that slid on an icy curve, then careening up quite a sloped median. Slow down and enjoy the beautiful NW scenery everyone!

Thanks for the welcome Pooch. DH has been working over in Yakima & Quincy since August. I worry about the passes for him, but he is from Nebraska, a snow boy for sure.

Ok, I've had enough of the snow. I'll take last weeks weather, the warmer one where I could actually get out and do some cleanup in the garden. I was slipping all over the place walking out to the barn and to the chicken run.

Graham is slowly, but surely, turning into another Puyallup. Little strip malls on the state highway, which was once a two lane road, now a four lane road. My five acres will be crowded in someday with housing developments all around. DH laughingly said he wants to move to Yakima. I said no, but some where a little less populated would be nice. Maybe lots of those tall trees to break the sound of the traffic about 1/4 mile away would help.

The sun is peaking through and I got out to the greenhouse to take a temp/humidity reading, moved a few pots around, etc. I guess it's housework today!

Happy New Year to everyone!

He is just 16, and goes to Lebanon HS plays all the sports except Baseball. Getting pretty good at Basketball (he should, he is 6'2"), football very good.

My catalog is for my business which sells iris and daylilies, which I can not mention here, but others can and I understand why and think it is a good reason and a logical one as well.

Wish we could weed but it is raining or misting here most of the time.

Finished the hat and can not wait to see if he loves it...and will wear it.

There is a worth of information on this forum...visit any of interest to you, you will gain knowledge, and make a ton of new friends.

Pardalinum gave you excellent advice about the Garden Watchdog.

Welcome to Daves Bonnie, sorry to have taken so long to welcome you, but I've been playing poker online... ignoring my garden for a few days. I'm getting my seedboxs ready for wintersowing, then it will be busy busy busy for a few weeks.

Looking forward to the daffs pokeing their heads up soon...
