These amphibians made a lot of noise a couple of nights back. In the morning, my DD showed frog eggs in my pond. They croak a lot at night probably before laying a long slimy string of eggs. While it does, the smaller male rides on top of the one that lays eggs. Anybody know the reason for this?
Frog eggs
The males make the croaking sound to attract the females.. They then ride on the female's back so they can release sperm at the same time that the female releases the eggs..

What about fertilization? When does that take place?
That takes place whn the eggs shot out of the female.

Rick
Is it not deposited for fertilization inside the female frog's body?
I think Dinu's are toad eggs. A good thing for the garden.
I may be calling a toad as a frog, till now. I have to find out the difference, henceforth. I had heard "You big old toad" in a famous Cricket (game) quotation (British).
Why are toad eggs / toads good for the garden?
WEll... toads are good in the garden because they eat bugs !
Toad tadpoles are voracious algae eaters until they get their hind legs. You will never have a pond as clean as when these little wigglers go to work. When they get legs they stop eating algae and begin to look for ways out of the pond. I don't know what species of toad you have there but the behaviour sounds exactly like what we have here. For want of a better name, or knowledege of a proper name, I call the tiny fully formed toads "toadletts". They are about the size of a little fingernail when they begin to emerge from the pond. We find them by the dozens all around the outside of the pond heading away from the water. Today we have about 10 "stacked" mating pairs and 1/2 dozen singles looking for mates. They sing quite loudly, especially at night. And, the season is just starting. I have counted upwards of 30 pairs at one time in some seasons.

Toads live on land and frogs live in the water. Toads (mine anyway) are usually a brown color and bumpy, and frogs are greenish and smooth.
Do toad houses work? I have a couple of huge toads that have lived on my porch for the last 2 years and if I kick off my wet tennies before going in the house you better check them before putting them on. The first year I stuck my foot in and there was a toad in the toe, scared me to death. I always check my shoes now.
That's pretty good information! Thanks. The taddies here smaller when they try to get out of water. The adults are brown and bumpy bodied. We have no green frogs. Toad houses... it is a good idea to leave an old shoe out there for them to house. But they find places under the bricks, in crevices.. more 'homely'. LOL. Yea, I too have found half a dozen mating pairs at one time and I removed them from the pond and left it to my neighbour's premises ;) They were also making lot of noise and preventing my sleep. But now with the knowledge that comes here, I would stop doing it and get their benefit to my own advantage, lest they disturb my sleep too much. The season here is starting with the rains expected any day - to cool the summer heat. And snapple calls it *singing*!!! Will get a picture of one of them tonight. So stay tuned!
The toads live on the front porch to get the bugs that come to the porch light. This one is HUGE, it no longer fits in anyones shoe, he fills up 2 hands.
One fall I brought all of my house plants in off of the porch and I checked them for toads, about a week later I was walking by one of the plants in the bedroom and saw little eyes poking out. The toad was not happy because he got put out and told to find a new winter home.
That is quite *HUGE* indeed, which I can't just imagine. His poking out from there would have made a very funny scene, is it not?
It wasn't the huge one that was in the flower pot but the "baby brother" that had hung out with him all season. I do not know how to sex toads nor do I care to, I just say him. The baby brother has grown well also, I am looking forward to seeing them this year. The big one has been there for 3 years now. My standard Poodle loves to bark at them if they get in the dog yard. I have to go out and rescue them so he doesn't deafen them barking 2" from their little heads.
Poodle...barking at them... must be another funny sight.
Yes it is. Our toad in MO are darker than yours but look the same otherwise. Thanks for the picture.
The long strands of eggs are definitely toad eggs.....the single floating eggs are frogs. Fish will eat the tadpoles of frogs, but not from toads. Either way, both frogs and toads will be a good thing for your yard. Occasionally if you have a smaller fish pond, and breeding is especially heavy one night, you can end up with a protein poisoning of the water and it will get foamy. In that case, you may want to remove some of the eggs and do a partial water change. I grow a good many plants in large pottery vases, in ONLY water, no soil, and throw in a net full of tadpoles. The plants grow like crazy and the water stays crystal clear.
I need to find some toad eggs for my little 40 gallon pond. We used to have toads around here but none since I moved back. Very little water in the area and no natural water. I want tadpoles! LOL
Tammie
Tammie,
If I can get them to you, I'll be happy to send you BILLIONS! The noise has been a bit overwhelming in the middle of the night, and my daughter has resorted to 3am toad tossing over the privacy fence, just so she can get some sleep,lol...
:)
Breeding season will be over soon.
We have locusts later in the year and some years they are deafening if you are outside in the very early evening and they are a ways away from my garden. After a while you just block it out unless you have visitors, then you have to yell at them.
Anyone have any idea how to mail frog eggs? Guess it might be sort of like mailing fish. A little water in a bag with lots of air and quick shipping. LOL
Tammie
3 am toad tossing !? - OMG you made me snort my coffee out my nose!
From now on, I'll call all my *frogs* as toads! LOL. A new thing learnt in this thread! That toad of mine is having a yellowish skin. He just hopped away after this picture.
I have seen 4-5 pairs releasing eggs the same morning. I didn't know about protein poisoning. Thanks for the same.
snapple, your projectile coffee snorting is a hoot!!
Don't mail the eggs, it's trickier....but mailing the tadpoles is much easier than fish. Because they take a gulp of air instead of trying to absorb oxygen out of the water through gills like fish, you can load them in a gallon ziploc bag with water, about 1/2 to 3/4 full, then inside another ziploc bag......
The main thing you'd have to worry about is killer heat or cold while shipping.
:)
Snapple45, ACKKKKKKKK, I just inhaled a cheese curl when I saw all of your TOADS? lovin it up, lol I have to say last summer I saw mostly arms n legs of those green frogs, as the females underneath them were strugeling to stay afloat!
Step back and put DOWN the cheese curls! Apparently eating and drinking on this forum can be dangerous!
"Sanjaya of the pond".... what does that mean?
"Privacy not required".... wonderful caption you chose there!
Ah well, you see, um, how do I put this? Perhaps this link will elucditate. "American Idol" is a huge hit American TV program. Talented, and some not so talented, individuals compete weekly on TV before judges for top honors. The judges, and via phone the viewing public, vote off each week who they judged to be the worst performer for that week. Sanjaya had a longer run on the show, that in the opinion of some, he deserved based on his talent or lack thererof. He had terrific style and personality. His voice, well that left something to be desired.

The toads around here are sure having a good time as well! I have seen several pairs floating around in one of the ponds just kind of bumping off of each other as they go by. I am so looking forward to the tadpoles. I have the cloudy water each spring and as soon as the tads appear it clears up overnight.
Tootsie, those are frog eggs and the pictures you have sent us are of a bullfrog. Frog eggs are laid singly in a mass of jelly and toad eggs are laid in strings.
Many thanks for the information. Sanjaya - is an Indian name and that is what caught my attention.
THANK YOU, Tetleytuna :) I was just at the pond house n all the racket from the pond!! aLL THAT CROAKING, i THINK THE ONE MALE, bullfrog, was calling all the female FROGS into his HAREM, LOL
