CLOSED: 5 Very Large Hollies have to go.

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Relandscaping front bed and want to find new home for 4 large leaf hollies (about 7' tall) and a Foster Holly that may be too big (10 - 12') to transplant. We live in far N.Dallas almost to Plano. Any ideas about who I should contact? I really hope we don't have to destroy these trees.

You could try donating them to your city Parks department or something like Habitat for Humanity. I recall reading something here at DG about HH taking donated plants.

Yes .... you should check out Habitat for Humanity .... I'm sure they would appreciate the donation of those beauties for some of the landscaping projects at their HH homes! What a wonderful gift you would be giving tp deserving families!

Hollies do not have a tap root. There is usually no problem transplanting. On the large one you can cut the top way back and it will regrow.

Why not post this over in the Texas Forum? I know if I was closer or had a truck I would take them myself but I know that there are folks over there that could take the plants or let you know a good place for the plants to go.

I have seen some great palnts go that way over there - we are a tight bunch over in the Forum and I am sure we would love to help.

Thank you all for all your help. It's helped me a lot. I would like to keep the Foster Holley and just trim it to make it blend in with the new landscape. The other 4 hollies may be able to be transplanted behind our waterfall in the back yard. I just don't know if the expense is worth it, but I am really attached to them. Will see what the landscaper says about the odds of them making it. All was to be done right before Thanksgiving, and now I'm thinking I should wait until next fall to transplant them. There's no real hurry, I guess. Thanks again.
