Sherri-
Don't be discouraged by the non-response. Many of us will have plenty to share come April.

You're so sweet. I was starting to get a complex. Thanks for explaining :)

Just an FYI, Sherri....I bought a Persian Lilac in a 3 gal pot - probably 4 foot high last spring at Walmart for only $10!!!! Was a "special buy" and they got bought up quick but I managed to snag one. Keep a faithful watch there...you'd be suprised what you can find there!!!

I have seeds from several varieties of cottagy flowers. I was just cleaning out my seed drawer tonight. If you want seeds, I can send you some of these:

Digitalis 'foxy' (no cottage garden is complete without foxglove)
Digitalis 'excelsior hybrids'
Campanula persicifolia 'telham beauty'
Nicotiana talacum 'pink star' (really tall - like 6 feet)
Nicotiana acuminata
Digitalis lantana
Rheum palmatum v. atrosanguineum
poppies - mixture of california poppies and papaver
Nicotiana sylvestris
Lupine 'tutti fruiti'
Asclepias,- dark pink

Let me know which ones, if any, you would like. This is a good time to start seeds.

Man, Pixydish, that's a nice list! If Jaz doesn't want them, I do! :)

Jazmine, I didn't see your post until just now - I will definitely have some things to share in the Spring. I'll check my seed supply for some for what you need. And crocosmia!! I only have the orange variety which is a bit invasive, but if you want some I'll be more than happy to share.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Pixy,
I was just going to say (b/c I have no pride...LOL) if you have any extra of the Nicotiana talacum 'pink star' (esp. if it has a good scent) I would love some. Be happy to dig thru my seeds and see if there's anyting you'd be interested in.

LOL! Let's wait until Jazmine responds and then I'll see. Since nicotiana sets about a gazillion seeds, I'm sure there are some to spare. Illoquin, which ones were you interested in?

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Nothing like completely hijacking someone's thread eh? LOL Of course first dibs go to her...she's the one that started the thread. Sorry Jazmine...I have absolutely NO pride...and since I was so bad I'll be happy to send you some sends too!! :)

Jazmine, what kind of viburnums are you interested in? I have some small rooted cuttings in the cold frame, 2 or 3 or 4 different varieties. Also, I have Pale Purple Coneflower (E. pallida) seeds (they'll need a cold treatment, I think).

Pixy - LOL now THAT'S a fact!!! :)

Silverado, CA(Zone 9b)

Wow - I havent checked my thread for a few days. Thank you so much everyone. I d-mailed a couple people with a response.

Stressbaby - your questions are stressing me out LOL. I have absolutely NO IDEA what my answer is cause I dont know enough yet.

The ones that I d-mailed and I promised to send postage - I am stuck trying to find a way to ship you a self addressed stamped bubble envelope without spending alot of money. So hang in there.

Sherri

Sherri,
I take a bubble envelope and address it to the person I am going to receive seeds from. Inside the bubble envelope, I include a self address label to myself, that the seed sender can be put over their address on the original bubble envelope that I sent them. I also include stamps inside that they can use to mail back the bubble envelope to me. Be sure to include inside what they are sending to you.

Hope this was clear, if not, I can try to explain again.

Crystalnurse - now why didnt I think of that - thats ingenious.

I ended up going out and purchasing small bubble mailers folded them up and put them in an envelope. I put my address on the bubble mailer with stamps, and a copy of the original posting. Now I am worried the envelope will not survive the mailing cause its slightly overstuffed with the bubble mailer and the envelope will get chewed up.

Now I know how to do it. Thanks

Do you think it will work? Its worth a try. I can always start in pots, then once I amend my soil really well, transplant them. I decided that's what I am going to do from now on.

Thanks - just let me know what you would like me to do?

Sherri

hickory, NC(Zone 7a)

well it says on the package that they need full sun and i see tha you arent needing full sun but you are still welcomed to them if you want plmk?

Silverado, CA(Zone 9b)

I better pass. I dont want to be accountable for killing any more plants (LOL). Thanks for offering.

Sherri, I"m mailing you some seeds in tomorrow's mail. Most will need some sun, but the ones I have that need all-day sun I didn't include. You should get a decent display with most of these. The poppies will need as much sun as you can give them.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

jazmine, I am growing a lot of foxglove, "Pam's Choice" and they are doing nicely. My spousal unit built a greenhouse for me for Christmas, 2005 so it is just over a year old and I'm trying everything in there, lol. I was surprised to see you asked for hollyhock which I think requires full sun.
If you will remind me in about a month, I will send some of the foxgloves. Do you need ground covers?

Silverado, CA(Zone 9b)

Pixydish - I sent you a d-mail

Woodspirit1 - I composed the list of plants from reading the Cottage Garden Forum. Upon further research, after posting this post - I had to trim the list down a bit because of sun requirements.

I do have spots that when I get sun - will receive 4 hours of morning sun, then another 3 possibly 4 in late afternoon. I have had success with Dahilias and I have a beautiful Yellow Canna that does great. Do all foxgloves require full sun?

I am still learning ..... I think - but cant say for sure - but it seems that some varieties of the same flower have different needs. Like some Brugmansias require full sun, but some can take full shade. So I was hoping that by generically listing "foxgloves", that someone might know of a variety that can withstand more shade than the others.

Does that make sense?

Silverado, CA(Zone 9b)

OOops - I forgot to answer about ground covers - most definetly YES YES YES.

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Sherri, in that pack of seeds I sent you I think I put a hollyhock that grew in morning sun only. I did have to stake it up as it wanted to lean towards any light it could find, but it was at least six feet tall and gorgeous.

Silverado, CA(Zone 9b)

murmur - I was just logging your seeds and saw the hollyhocks. I was so excited. I figure if they grew for you, they should grow for me - dont you have a lot of "cloudy" weather? Is cloudy weather considered full sun even though the sun isnt bright outside? Or would it be considered part sun?

I dont mind staking plants. I had to with the Dahlia's and when I was first growing my brug. My brug is just now standing on its own after a year.

I just purchased a punch of seed starting trays with the plugs and dome.....can you tell I am super excited !!!!

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

We do have a lot of cloudy weather, but also have nice summers - but that hollyhock planted itself (probably with the help of one of our feathered friends) almost against the house on the east side. Very little sun there, only in the morning.

Silverado, CA(Zone 9b)

PERFECT !!!!!
