mango seeds

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

has anyone ever taken mangoes from the grocery store and germinated those seeds? i am trying to use the seeds but when we open the husk it looks like some of the seeds have already started trying to germinate. some of them have brownish spots or maybe dried up looking spots. we put 2 in water just to see what they would do....just did that yesterday. but the real purpose for this is i want to send mango seeds to england. does anyone know the best way to send mango seeds thru the mail?

I've tried a few, but never got a plant.

I have germinated them with bottom heat and put the seed on edge not laying flat. Try that and see if you get a mango. :-)

I found this link

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

yes CC Happy New Year..and as your report states in it's second 1/2
I cut the husk off the seed.. and put it mostly in soil right away.. after eatting the mango.. it is a bit difficult to cut along the edge of the seed husk... till you can fee the bean looking inner seed... just lightly score the edge of the armor plated seed.. a tough husk...indeed to release the seed...without cutting it...I have one now.. I'd send a picture of it . but it's looking kind of sad.. it had been doing OK then on comming inside it was upset and has lost many of it's leaves... must be a dormancy wish... here in NY.. [ I've got it also.. enen with the warm weather here] but I'm sure it will come around.. with the longer days and warmer temperatures.. [ I will also ]
MAMA...if I were going to send them to England.. I'd just clean the seed husk..and send them away... In England they /you can cut the seed out of the husk and plant... don't they have good mangos in England already ? or are these mangos special in another way.. Gordon

i don't know if england has mangoes or not. this guy i am trading with wants one though. this is not a special mango. just the grocery store variety. thanks for the information. i had already decided to send it with the husk and i thank you for reinforcing that. barb

One caution is that the mangoes that you buy at the store are probably a hybrid cultivar and won't come true from seed, so the mangoes that you get from it may not taste nearly as good as the original.

where can i get a "real" mango seed?

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

What do you mean by "real" mango seed? If you mean a seed that will grow up to be one of the hybrid cultivars, you can't get those, you would have to do them by cuttings or maybe grafting, I don't grow mangoes so I don't know which way is typical for them. But I'm sure some of the places that sell tropical seeds would have seeds for non-hybrid mangoes, try Trade Winds Fruit or Top Tropicals for starters, and if you don't have luck there go to Garden Watchdog and check some of the other places that sell tropical seeds. They won't be exactly the same as grocery store mangoes but they should still taste good.

MaMa Jack, If you are patient I can get you several different kinds of mango seed, but, they are from hybrid trees and rarely do they come true from seed. The nice thing about the seed is that no matter how it turns out it will produce a plant that has edible fruit, it just won't be exactly like the parent. I have a client that has several different kinds of hybirds and all summer long I am pulling up seedlings that the squirrels have planted in the flowerbeds. To get mango to sprout you really need a tree ripened fruit/seed and warm night time temps (mid-70's). I will be working there tomorrow, it I find a sprouter that I have missed (the place is over an acre) I might be convinced to save it for you.

dale that sure is a pretty place in the photo. yes i want some tree ripened seeds. i tried to find some mango at a fruit stand but wasn't able to at this time. now how can i convince you to do this for me? lol.

Orlando, FL

I hear you have to have two trees for them to bear fruit??? Our neighbor has one or two in the back of us and its been there for at least 8 yrs and it never has had any fruit on it. It was not grown from a seed. Fran

This reference (and others I've seen) suggest that mangoes are generally self-fertile which means you can get fruit even if you have just one tree, but often even self-fertile fruit trees will bear more fruit if there's a second one around for cross-pollination.

My Grandmother has a Hayden mango tree -just one- that's blooming as we speak :) It took a pounding from the Hurricanes, but an arborist cleaned it up.

If only you had been looking a couple months ago, Mamajack!!!.... I had found a volunteer (the only volunteer I've ever found despite all the squirrels, possums & birds) but something happened to it. I think someone may have pulled it up since it was growing not 5 feet from the front window and under the overhang.
I'll take another look for it, but I'm not hopeful.
It would also take a couple months to get ripe fruit from Grandma's tree.

LOL- I'm not helpful at all! Wish I could help you though :)

Man, Hetty! You get around! I am starting to feel better but I have a grandson born this week (Wednesday) so I am going to Boca wednesday. I have a lot of mango trees if you need one. The only thing is- The hurricanes blew their tags off. 80% are the most amazing mangoes I ever tasted and not too fibery. It's a roll of the dice but you are welcome to have one. They are 3 to 5 yrs old.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

yes i do want one. i will dmail you.
