Tillandsia duratii

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

I got this plant at the fall plant festival at USF. The vendor had one that was a blooming example, but none of the ones to buy was in bloom. I loved the flowers and the curly leaves so I splurged. Well, mine finally bloomed this week! It really surprised me; I had no idea it was coming. But what really surprised me was that when I was taking it down from its hanging spot to show to Mom, I smelled the most wonderful fragrance. Not only is this thing pretty, it smells wonderful! I had no idea bromeliads could produce fragrance. Mom thought it smelled like an orchid, Dad said lavender, and I think it's like a flowery soap. I'm going to have to get more of these!

It's one of my favorites too. There are a number of fragrant Tillandsias and this one lasts a long time. I love the curlyQ leaves.
