broccoli

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

I planted broccoli in August. The plants are about 18" tall, and lots of leaves but no broccoli! What should I do? Just be patient? Or is there something I should feed them? Thanks!

The part of the broccoli that we eat is the blossom, so as soon as the plants are mature enough to bloom they will make some for you. I believe it takes 120 days to maturity. A little side dressing of nitrogen in the form of compost or alfalfa meal helps, and they do like moisture.
After you harvest the large center flower heads, leave the plant in place and it will make more florets at the leaf axils which you can also harvest. It will eventually bolt and go to seed when hot weather arrives.
I hope that helps.

Thanks! It's been at least that long and no flowers, so I'll go make some alfalfa tea as soon as I get home. (They need a Christmas dinner, too!) It's my first stab at broccoli, hopefully not my last.
