News - my plant stand is set up and babies are here

Lindenhurst, NY

Here's my Christmas present to me. My 1st plant stand. And also, just today my first babies were born!!! I took close ups of them. I've been waiting patiently since Oct 18. It took 8 wks. Now I have them on the plant stand so I think they will grow better where they are. They were on my windowsill at work which is very drafty. Now they are in my bedroom near 2 radiators and on the plant stand.

By the way - can anyone tell me if I should be doing something for more humidity?

Thanks to all of you for all your help in helping me become an a/v mother :-)

Different growers have different methods of raising humidity. All I do is line my trays with cheap synthetic acrylic blanket material cut to fit and keep them wet. They can be washed easily in the machine as needed. Not fancy but it works well.

Thanks Snow. it works and the price is right.

Great stand. You will love it. For humidity I put gravel in the trays and fill with water. I have a grid on top of the tray and the plants sit atop the grid.

Hi Nanna - what kind of gravel do you use? And where do you buy it? Does the water stay below the level of the gravel? And do they make the grids to fit the trays? Where do you get the grids from? Thanks

The grids are from home depot. They are 2ft X 4ft and are used to cover ceiling lighting fixtures. I cut them to fit the trays. The gravel is from AC Moore (a craft store). I suppose you could use regular gravel and wash it with bleach and hot water. Don't know. I wick my plants so the water level is above the gravel. I used to just have water in the trays but the gravel seems to slow the growth of algea. I use fertilizer at the rate of 1/4 tsp per gallon and refill the trays with plain water when the water gets low.
About every two to three weeks I rinse the rocks with hot water and oil soap or lysol and fill the trays with fertilizer water again. I clean the stands at the same time.

Awesome Maureen!!! You have babies!!!! Love your stand too!!! Are you as new as I am to AVs? I'm not even gonna add up the money I've spent since I came to the AV Forum. All because of 2 AVs I picked up at Lowes about 3 months ago. LOL
Congrats and Merry Christmas!!

Merry Christmas Maureen ! I love your stand ! It came fast :)) Your babies are adorable congratulations ! You can even put a few little solo cups around plants with water to help with humidity . Grouping plant together but not touching ( though baby cups can touch ) helps with humidity also ! You can also put you baby cups in a clear plastic shoe box type holder and cover . Keep little holes in cover and watch that you don't get too much moisture . One I started getting babies I liked taking them out I'd give them a fish drink or VF-11 drink what ever I had on hand and kept them close to light almost touching and they loved this ! Sitting plants on damp pebbles.
Like Nanna mentioned you do want to be careful of any algea , fungus or other build ups or even pest that enjoy water away. Washing them every couple weeks with bleach or lysol and hot water. I use to wash /soak my tayes and boxes with hot water and strong bleach every couple weeks.
Have fun ! Mery Merry Christmas :))
