close up of Tiger Kitten. I love the color and pattern. About the only rex begonia I've had any luck with. I do better with mallet(aka angel wing)begonias

Peggy, you have a beautiful collection of babies there - WOW is all I can say!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Fabulous!

Are those begonia 'Tiger Kitten' babies grown from leaf cuttings, or did you take suckers/divisions from the mother plant? They're cute -- and what an adorable name!

(Zone 1)

Oh ... You really do have a "newborn" nursery there Bigred! Love all those leaves and the big babies too! 'Tiger Kitten' Begonia - what a cute name! Love it! And, what is 'Tranquility' that you are waiting to bloom? Is that an AV or a Begonia or what?

P What an enormous collection of babies you have! Amazing.I can't wait to see all of them bloom.

Look at all those kidos. Boy, will you have fun this spring seperating those little guys.

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

critter,
I cut the original plant apart.I tried growing rex type from leaf before with no success.

plantladylin,
Tranquility is an av. She's open this am but not taking a very good pix since she's a white and pale periwinkle blue and light reflecting off her from flash is causing too much glare if I try to zoom in. I'm going to see if I have some black poster board to put behind her and see if that'll help.

nanna,
here hoping hub's gets my new light bench built soon so I'll have room for them.

Woo,Hoo,look at all the babies!
Beautiful pictures Peggy.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Wow, look at all the babies!!!! Do you have your AV leaves in vermiculite? And did you cover them? I'm not having much luck with all the leaves I put down.
Love the Tiger Kitten too!!

WOW I love babies ! You sure can grow them ! Great growing Peggy !
Please take up dated pictures along the way !

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

Thanks Jan

Debbi,
It's straight vermucilite. It doesn't crust, collect salts and the babies seem to pop out quicker.

P

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

V_T,
will do.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Yes lots of people root or grow straight vermucilite .
Some people grow all their pleants in a mixture of Perlite and vermucilite only beacauce they have allergies .

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

Hey, those look very nice and healthy bigred. Do you put a top on them? when their newly rooting.

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

No,I don't use any kind of top.

P

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Some of my leaves are rotting. I put them down in my AV mix and used a plastic dome.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Do you mean the ones in AV mix and dome rotted ? When ever I covered even with holes some part opened mine would have rotted if I had not kept checking them. Many times I did cover by the next day I had to take them all off.

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

That's the reason I don't put tops on mine.

P

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Yes I understand . Everyone once in awhile I'd do it again on a large box thinking saving time on watering ... but by the next day or less I was taking them off and losing some.
Sounds like what your doing you have plenty of Humdity :))

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Yes VT, I put them down in my moist mix and put them on a tray and covered them with a clear dome under lights. Some of them have rotted and some of the leaves have white stuff on them. I'm gonna start another thread so I don't jack up bigred's thread cause somethings not going right and I have some special leave coming I don't wanna mess up.

Debbie

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I gave ideas on your other thread good luck :))

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

VT, I think I'm gonna cut a couple leaves off the first noids I bought and try the vermiculite like bigred is doing. Look how awesome the babies are!!!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Good fun idea ! Don't cover. vermiculite does hold moisture more. I have know people all they grow in is Perlite and vermiculite beacasue of Allergies and have wonderful healthy plants ! You can mix half and half or more 60 percent Perlite !

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

Be sure to take care when watering leaves in vermucilite, not to over water in winter because it does retain water in bottome half even though tops will look dry. If the pot feels heavy..don't water.

P

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Oh, I already did this and forgot. I had just read your thread when I was dividing Rob's Outer Orbit and ended up with 5 leaves. 2 went in regular AV potting mix with added Perlite, 2 went in vermiculite cause I saw this thread and 1 went in water. And they're not covered! They're all dated so we'll see how they go.

Debbie

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Cool ! will be fun watching them grow :))
