Does anyone have experience with feline distemper?

New Hampshire, NH(Zone 5b)

I recently adopted a cat from a shelter who died the following day. The vet who saw her is pretty certain she had feline distemper (panleukopenia) based on her blood work. I have done quite a bit of research and have talked to the vet several times over the past two days as I try to figure out when, and if, I can get another kitty. I have cleaned my house quite thoroughly with bleach and I plan to do so again another 2 or 3 times, but everything I'm reading says the virus is very strong and can last a long time on certain surfaces, despite thorough cleaning.

According to my vet, who also consulted with a panel of medical advisors, if I get a healthy cat who has been vaccinated according to vet recommendations (2 to 3 boosters, 3 weeks apart, with the latest vaccine being at least 2 weeks prior to exposure to infected area), the vaccinated cat will be safe in my home. What I'm trying to find out is, does anyone have experience with this? What were the results - positive or negative? My heart really aches for a kitty, but I would never be able to forgive myself if I made another cat sick by bringing it into my home.

Thanks for whatever help you might be able to provide.
