Confused about which ee-type plants like water/bogs

Melbourne Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

I recently purchased a plant labeled alocasia black stem at WalMart. I have several other varieties of colocasia, xanthosoma and alocasia as well. I'm wondering if there is a rule of thumb about which of these like to be in a bog like area or at least like to be somewhat wet. And specifically if this new guy likes water. Thanks!

Vicky, most colo's love water / bog conditions in summer.Alocasias like moist but not waterlogged or submerged soil. Xanthosomas I have grown either way. They do just fine.

Eclipse: Beautiful pond!

Eclipse-are those Hilo Beauties in the foreground in the sun? I had always thought that they needed a good deal of shade-that would be good to know if they can go in full sun!

Thanks Eclipse, and it is a beautiful pond! I had the black stem in a non-functioning little 6" deep pond that's at the base of a rock waterfall (also non-functioning). I keep water in the pond part. It was doing okay but not great. After your helpful info, I've now taken it out of the pond. I have an Illustrus in the ground and that baby couldn't seen to get enough water this summer. It's kind of died back now and I'm hoping it will perk up after the winter. I want to move it to a better place moisture-wise and wondered if I should do it now or in the spring. What do you think?

Tigerlily you can grow hilo's in the sun part day..these got sun for about 5 hrs a day.

Vicky, If the coloc. is dormant wait till growth starts in your spring then move to wetter spot and stand back.........it will flourish.

Thanks again Kyle -- you obviously know your ee's! I also have several others -- Micky Mouse, Alocasia amazonica, one that's very black (I haven't id'd it yet) and a couple of others. I have found I really like them and there is such variation. My only problem is finding a good place to put them. Other than the Illustrus they're all currently in pots. I'd like to "build" a place but I'm not exactly sure of their requirements -- and if these vary. I need to learn more!!
