A day too late

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

But I figured I would be able to save the pods. They got so fried last night. A couple of weeks ago we had so many severe frost warnings one night I ran out and covered lots and I totally escaped any damage on even the ones uncovered. So last night I thought I would be so lucky again. No such luck. All my brugs got fried, front and back.

Looks like halloween out there. LOL

Look at poor Ruthie. She is so tall no way I can cover her. Yesterday she had tons of buds on her.

News is on, says it will be a record cold tonight. 30 degrees.

This is a fancy German brug. Fried. LOL. But the Tibouchinas behind it are doing are still doing just great. Even my rhizomatous begonias outside are still fine.

You can see the Tibouchina is just full of buds.

kell that is a shame, I didn't think you ever had that much cold weather,

I feel for you Kell...you work so hard all season growing your brugs just to have them get fried in one night. So what's next? Do you gather them up and bring them inside?

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Oh..Kell...
Surely there's life in the roots... it couldn't have gotten cold enough in one evening to lower the root zone temps... although the stems would have been sending cold fluids back to the roots looking for warmer fluids as a replacement ... in an attempt to avoid the damage to the leaves... SO... how much how long... you'll know if yo dig it.. and give it a rest... then another shot at growing... just a 1/2 hour of digging [ each tree ] ..repotting... and some rest space..and you'll know...then you can still have a loss... but you'll have given it your second best shot...
you'd said you were looking to cut back.. was this a [ sub ]conscious act of wish fullfilment.. Kell I'm surprised... and I'm without any doublepink prospects now... we were all counting on you... miss one perfect pink... [now there's a holy grail ]
All kidding aside...we are all saddened
Gordon

Oh do not worry, they will all live! Thanks for caring!! But they will look terrible for awhile now. Why I didn't cover them when I should have!!! Kicking myself hard. 1 more night of frost then hopefully no more frost till spring. Knock on wood!

Doris, we always get just enough to kill off my annuals like my impatiens and petunias. Though last year we only had a few hours of frost all winter so some did make it thru. It is unusual for me to get 3 days in a row of it. In 1990 we had a killer freeze and even my Tibouchinas died to the roots. I thought I was oging to be OK last night because when I went to bed at 3:30 AM it was 34 degrees. But Patricia who is not that far from me but inland got down to 25 last night I think.

Don't worry Gordon, I have a double PINK in my hoophouse I can cut on for you all if I need to. LOL. But the rest of them are somewhat fried for a month or 2. LOL

The fried ones I won't cut on now till spring because I am afraid rot will set in. The leaves though will fall off by themselves in a few weeks. I may lose some of the tops too. But I bet I get new node growth in month or so.

Kell, I am so sorry that your brugs. had so much damage. I had moved all mine inside the greenhouse except for two on the patio. They are both under cover but the B. Miss Caylie still looks like it got frost on just because it was so cold. It looks like we are going to be in this weather pattern until Wednesday.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I was thinking of you last night Patricia when I heard your temp was going down to 25. Did you have to turn on the heat in the GH? No way I could bring all of mine in or even 10% of them. No room!! Also I have so many in 25 gallon pots, no way they are going anywhere. We are getting too old! LOL Though my husband did come out to help me cover up some of the taller brugs. True love. LOL

Same look here! I left all but my precious Heddy outside to fend for themselves. Last week I was going to take a picture of that lovely Big Yella you gave me last year, I planted it right next to my front porch and it's so tall and all the blooms hung over the walkway, awesome fragrance as we walked in and out in the evenings and was such a cheerful full-of-blooms sunny look out my kitchen window. But I kept forgetting, it has been so full of blooms for weeks now. They don't look so hot this morning!! I brought most of the begonias in 2 days ago but the others in huge pots stayed and look OK, they seem to be tougher than I thought.

Kell, The only one I have left planted in the yard is my B. desiree. I may lose it, but had started another from cuttings so I am O.K. with that one. Yes, Bob gave in and is letting me run the heater when we get below freezing which has already been about 4-5 nights so far this winter.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh good Patricia! I was worried for you. I hope we warm up. It looks just great out today! I haven't been out yet to see the new damage.

Sue, I am so shocked how good the begonias all look. I was thinking I may plant them all in the ground if they are so hardy but when the rains start I bet that would rot them all along with the cold.

Hey you 2, we sure missed you guys on Saturday! They had really cleaned out the Conservatory and replanted some smaller plants. They had a new exhibition too. A bit odd. LOL

PS Sue..CONGRATULTIONS on all your photo wins. All were just so great. I love looking at your photos! I was going to email you when I was looking at them all then got sidetracked.

Boo Hoo! Look at what happened to the beautimous blooming 'Butterfly' cutting you gave me Kell. Poor melted thing!
Guess that's what happens at 22º!!! The others in this garage did well - but they are in one gallon cans and this one is in a 15. It could be worse!

going off to sulk now... sniff!

great shot of that....what ever it was, at the conservatory!!

Lali, your BF looks great. Looks more like it needs water. I just ran outside and mine really are fried more today. I used every sheet, towel and blanket I had last night. Tonight I am going to cover a few more if I can get out to buy some of that freeze cover. BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR In spring you need to trim it back a bit to get the side nodes to shoot out.

I was thinking what to call that thing at the Conservatory and had no clue. LOL

Gosh my Distictis 'Rivers' is fried too. I have never had frost damage on it before.

Us spoiled Californians are being frosted. I don't think any of mine are dead, but look like they want to be put out of their misery. LOL Going to have some leaf loss and tip damage, but I'm sure they'll be alright. Yours will too Lali.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh Mary, you too are having a frosty few nights? Gee across the state and I hear from friends it is warm on the East coast. I do not think they feel so bad for us. LOL

I was surprised to place in three different categories in the contest, they were so many nice ones this year! Great rose shot for yours Kell, making First Place!!

Lula, GA

Sorry to hear about your damage. My brugs looked fine, til it got down to about 27-28 degrees, here in GA. All ours die back to the roots and start blooming again in June.

My sister lives in So. Cal. and has had many frosts, which really surprises me. She is about 8 miles from the ocean. I don''t remember it frosting that much when I was a kid in CA, many, many moons ago. Many!! LOL!!
