Does anyone what kind of temps this plant can tolerate? On Plant Files, it shows Zone 9B and up. This sounds like it could only survive the winter in a greenhouse or indoors where I live. Has anyone grown this one without a greenhouse in a zone like mine? If just grown like an annual here, would it get very big before frost?
Hibiscus sabdariffa
Info from Floridata:
Hardiness: USDA Zones 8 - 11. Seeds can be planted outdoors in USDA zones 8-11. Farther north (to zone 6), start seeds indoors and transplant outside after all danger of frost. Roselle can be a short-lived perennial in zones 10 and 11.
Propagation: Roselle is an annual propagated from seed.

Thanks! I guess I could start some next March. Hmmm, wish they flowered before October!
Mine didn't survive in zone 7 and it flowered beautifully, but never produced seed pods, I was truly disappointed, cause the seeds were very hard for me to find. We're talking about the yellow flowered one right?
I understand the flower color described as
In the fall the plants EXPLODE with flowers that start the day yellow with a light blush of pink and end the day as a dark, dusty rose color.
Are you still growing these?
talking to me?
No, I didn't have any this year.
Kathy Ann did yours ever bloom or produce seed?
No it never did produce seed. I was hoping for some though. I gave up on it.
Thanks, I was trying a plant and hoping too. : )
