Soup to Help Get Rid of That Cold

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

Warning: You gotta love garlic. I will post two recipes, the first one comes from Prevention magazine's Practical Encyclopedia of Natural Healing, the second one from a little newsletter I get called Bottom Line Personal. I have used the Prevention magazine recipe many times over the years. It will kick a cold in about 3 days. This past weekend I tried the recipe from Bottom Line. I had a serious cold come on Friday night, by Sunday afternoon it was on its way out. Here you go, hope this helps.

Prevention Mag:
Heat a cup of milk till it's scalding hot. Then add one tablespoon of honey and a teaspoon of butter, and stir until well mixed. Last, toss in a half (or more) teaspoon of grated fresh garlic. (If you have no fresh garlic, use garlic powder.) Add some cayenne pepper or hot pepper flakes if you have some. This savory concoction is then sipped slowly about an hour before retiring.

The more garlic and hot pepper the better. Three nights and that cold will be gone.

Bottom Line's recipe:
One quart chicken stock, home made or canned
One head of garlic (about 15 cloves), peeled
One bay leaf
One tsp each basil, curry powder, and lemon pepper
5 sprigs each of cilantro and parsley
Hot pepper flakes or cayenne pepper, as much as you can tolerate.

Combine all ingredients. Simmer uncovered 30 minutes. Remove bay leaf. Puree the garlic and herbs, return to pot. Stir well.

Sip 2-4 TBLS to one-half cup 3 or 4 times daily. Preferrably 30 minutes before meals. (I'm never hungry when I'm that sick so I just sipped it several times a day.)

Rest. Stay warm and cozy, lots of lemon water. Oh yeah, stay home from work at least the first 48 hours, that's when your cold is most contagious, and you are less likely to spread it around the office.

Hope this helps at least one person out there!
Mary
