This is a seedling that I grew out for Delisa. It's not quite what i was hoping for out of this cross...but it is pretty...
The cross was Bride x New Ocre
A New White Seedling
What an interesting calyx! I love the low ones like that.
It wouldn't be so split Kell. The calyax would come close and hug the blossom. Actually reminds me of the calyx on JMB (Jamie's Monkey Business) little bit.
The calyx is split because I peeked to see if it was going to be a double....That's what I was hoping for....:{
I have been known to peek too, Gary! LOL. Though usually I am forever walking by and grabbing them for a squeeze hoping for that thickened middle. So is Bride a double? Still, she is a sweet little white. If you could cross her with a small yellow, how cool to get a little yellow with a low calyx.
Oh Gordo, I am not sure getting hooked on brugs is a good thing or a curse. LOL
Yes Kell, Bride is a beautiful double white that Delisa has. I think Bride may just be a working name...it's not officially registered. I will have to talk to Delisa to see if we will keep this one and work with it.
Perhaps a little NOL (New Orleans Lady) pollen might do her some good. I think hitting her with a little colored double pollen might activate that latent double gene that is lying dormant in this plant.
The more i look at her, the more i think i like her...I just went outside for a whiff.....she smells WONDERFUL!!!
She sounds better and better! And YES, New Orleans Lady sounds great as a match made in heaven. LOL.
I was wondering too, Gary if you have one that is a double x a single and get a single if you cross that single with a double, how much more you have increased your chances to get double seedlings.
When I think of genetic i always think in terms of breeding dogs. When you have a trait that is recessive (not showing up) but you know it is in the genes because one of the parents has it, you try to breed to something that has the trait (preferably a visible dominant trait) that you want to bring out. So in theory if you take a single that is the result of a double x single cross and you want to increase the chances of next generation doubles then you want to breed that single to a double. That will hopefully strengthen that double gene making it dominant in the next generation.
I like it a lot x it has a nice clean Color lots of the whites dont Regards Paul
The color is pure white. It's actually a satiny white with a sheen. The blooms you are looking at have just been thru 2 days of torrential downpours. The thick white corolla stood up very well.....
I crossed a lot of my single pinks from a double mother with another double. But I was wondering by what % it increases the chance to get double seedlings. Like is it 1 in 4 or 2 in 4? I wonder if the chances are better with this cross even with the single mother than with the Double X single with no double in its background.
I also crossed my doubles with a single that had double mother. I would think this is the best cross of all if you want double seedlings.
It comes down too, to which ones to grow out. Also I still want my perfect single PINK more than I want another double PINK.
Kell, if i knew all the odds and percentages I'd be at the craps tables right now!!
Oh I didn't expect an answer really Gary, I was just wondering. Well mostly I was wondering last summer when I planning my crosses. What I ended up thinking was that the cross of a double X single but with a double mother was the one that would ensure the most double seedlings. But............ what do I know?? LOL I also wondered if your chance of defectives rose a bit if you used the X single with a double mother instead of the X single with single parents as it does with double X double. I tend to think based on nothing, that it doesn't!
I also have a few single pinks with double mothers so I was wondering too what the odds were for these.
Kell, the common belief is that a double mother has the highest chances of throwing double babies. However that has been proven over and over again that that is not written in stone. Several of Delisas crosses for example
(Rubiline x Peanut) have produced beautiful double pinks. Rubiline being a single. I would think that those single babies produced by double mothers have the greatest chance of throwing double babies when crossed back to a double daddy.....it's just like the lottery though...but in this case the odds are in your favor.
Well, you might be disappointed, but I think it's adorable!! I love it!!!
It would be cool if we all kept track just to see! Delisa sure seems to have the double touch!
Delisa has had more double pinks this year than anyone else i know. She just seems to know which crosses will produce double pinks. I have several of her seed crosses that have produced beautiful doubles for other people...mine are just a year old and I'm waiting for them to 'Y'......
Well good luck to you with them Gary! I hope you get some real special ones.
