I saw 2 Hummingbirds at the same time earlier today. They were sort of chasing each other playfully around...then one came down and I was able to get a few shots. Can you spot him here?
Hummer updates
Great pics gp, I sure do miss my hummers. What kind of camera are you using?
wow lucky you. Mine have been gone for 2 months
Great pics!
This is a really nice time of year for me with hummers, the rest of the year they aren't so colorful, but now we have everyone else's hummingbirds and I've got some pretties with the most fantastic ruby throats I've ever seen.....I wish I was thoughtful enoguh to take my camera out with me, I'll have to try that LOL
Thanks. I use an Olympus SP 500 Ultra Zoom.
Sweet pictures gardenpom!!
Hi. Still have hummers. They are living on my Abutilons in the side yard. Also, a great plant for winter nectar is Grevillea Rosmarinifolia. It is blooming now with hot pink flowers, right next to my Arbutus Unedo, which these guys may take up residence in when it gets a little bigger.
Mary, I hadn't heard of the Grevillea and looked it up.....very pretty....which cultivar do you have and where did you find it?
Your little hummer is soooooo cute!!! Thanks for sharing the photos with all of us!
A d o r a b l e!
Ironically, my local bird book from the University of CA at Riverside says that two species of hummingbirds stay all year around in our zones... 18 & 19(Sunset Western Garden Book). However today was the first time I have seen a hummingbird in a month or so. I brought the feeders in today to give them a good soaking. I am going to put them back out full tomorrow and see if more hummers come back. The weather for the last week has, I am sure, chased off all the hummers. It has killed off all the flowers that the hummers love for nectar. Nice photos in this thread...good for you, gardenpom.
Thanks for sharing,
Chuck
Your hummers are adorable! I'm enjoying all your photos!
Just wondering .... how big are your hummer nectar plants?
Hmmmm ..... mine are about that size now too with tons of blooms. I just can't figure out why I am not getting any hummers in my yard. Oh well ..... :-{
I feel bad you don't see any hummers, but I bet I had them long before I saw any. I bet this will be the year they find your floral smorgasbord.
I sure hope they like what I set out...lots of Nectar plants this year. We shall see... in pictures. You know I will report on that!
I wonder if I am too far North (20 miles south of Ocala) to have wintering hummers.
It's worth a try Karen... Keep a look-out..:-)
hi all,
am new to this site, but love it. i have one lone hummer that seems to be content to stay with me a all winter. i see him every day eating at my pentas. in a few weeks they all will start to fly north, but who knows with this crazy weather we all are having. i am thinking maybe i should put all my feeders out!
best to all and enjoy the warm weather... and can not wait till spring :-)
He's so precious, gardenpom! He must be getting used to seeing you and is getting more trusting, How awesome!!!
Adorable shots of your hummers! Your Firebush looks really healthy. Mine is in limbo right now. It seems like the first year I plant anything, they kind of go into shock, second year they start showing some growth, and the third year - look out they really start taking off!
How tall and wide is your Firebush?
One of my co-workers (who lives not too far from me) said that she has a Mother and baby hummer hanging around in her yard currently. She hadn't seen any until just recently. Maybe it takes them a while to migrate this far south? Who knows! She's got them .... that's what counts! I told her to send the juvie to my house! lol
My Firebush is very large....at least 12 feet tall and probably the same in width. I also have a few others, some from seeds thrown from the parent plant.
Ah ha! That's why you have hummers! LARGE hummer nectar plants! LOL! My Firebush is very little. Maybe 2' tall.
Though, my Cape Honeysuckle is rather large 8' tall and loaded with blooms. Sounds like the Firebush is THE hummer plant to grow. :-)
Would be ever so grateful if you'd send those little suckers up here for vacation.....
I had a wee Warbler checking out the hummie feeder, LOL! Had no clue what would come to it since the hummies left in fall. Thought I would leave a couple oz. out there for whatever would fly by here until spring, and so far this is what I got, hahaha!
Orange-crowned Warbler that is.... I have been seeing a lot of this little sweetie.
