Now that I almost know what I'm doing....

Pix of my seed sewn episcia seedlings from "Faded Jade". Plants at the very top left of the screen, sitting outside the tray, are from mother "Faded Jade" plant that seeds were also taken from.

Super great growing ! Thanks for sharing !

How long did it take them to grow by seeds ?

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

They were started at intervals as they rippened.First seeds sewn 8/7/06 then 8/30/06 and the last pod to rippen 9/11/06. I potted these up on on 11/29/06,12/08/06 and last ones on 12/14/06.

Wonderful work. Beautiful plants. I really love the show the leaves put on. Brightens my day.

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

Only time will tell if they grow into keepers...otherwise I'll be looking for new homes for them. Still 42 tiny plants left in the plug tray besides these already potted up.

Pix is the succession of plantings from very first to very last potted up.

Very Pretty : )

How great, Bigred! Your very own seedlings.... love the shimmery leaves and congratulations on the nice photos, too. You did it!

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

Just about threw a rod in the ole brain but..yup...I finally did it.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Fantastic!!

It's interesting how some of the leaves on the offspring (from stolons?) at the top of the first photo have a pattern more like the one on 'Chocolate Soldier', while others (younger ones maybe?) look the same as most of your seedlings.... It will be interesting to see what develops as the seedlings get older, but they all look like "keepers" to me! :-)

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Pretty pretty babies ! You should be so proud ! I'd love to trade a baby when it's warmer . I have E.F. Blue Heaven, Alsobia Cygnets, Grey Lady..

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

critter,
Yes,the top ones are from stolons while all the ones inside the tray are from seeds.

I checked that webpage of episcias and my plant more resembled Faded Jade than Chocolate Soldier.I chould be wrong. Wouldn't be the first time.

V_T,
I'm always up for trades but I've never grown alsobias. By time it's warm enough to ship seedlings should be on a size to see their true colors...I hope.

P

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I still have several Cygnets and always a couple blooming ! Their a fun plant to grow and share !

Bigred: Great Growin! Lovely "babies" you have there! I have never grown Especia's but am really considering trying one in the spring to see how it will do. I have bought a couple of Chirita's from Rob's Violets and have been thinking of the Especia. I'm going to purchase from him again in the spring, probably one of the Especia's as well as more Violets or Chirita's.

Would love to make a trade with you when one of your little ones grows up a bit .... don't know if there's anything in particular you are looking for though ... most of the plants I have are house plants.

Lin

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

plantladylin,
Episcias are about the easiest palnts to grow, especially inside. I had mine outside this spring and summer. Got a little scorch on my Strawberry Patch but I just shifted it to a shadier spot and it kept on trucking.

There's so many of this little seedling buggers,I'll have to find home for a bunch.

P

(Zone 1)

Oh Bigred ..... Are they all spoken for yet? If you are putting some up for adoption, I would do my best to be a good Episcia Mama! And, you say they are easy to grow? I have been growing houseplants for years .... but have never tried Episcia's .... I thought they would be difficult for some reason. I've never had a problem with African Violets ... do episcia's take the same kind of care as AV's? This one ('Faded Jade') that you have all the babies from, what color are the flowers on it? And, I am assuming that 'Strawberry Patch' is another Episcia?
I remember seeing here on DG a photo of one someone posted called 'Chocolate Soldier' and it was beautiful in bloom!

Oh, I'm going to do a google search right now to see if I can see some more photo's! I think need to have one of these plants, especially if they are easy to grow!

LIn
episcia's are easy to grow ! They love Floridas heat and humdity ! They grow like weeds. I grow mine in natural light and have grown them inside and out. But once they go outside they don't come back in.
Yes if you do a search this forum is loaded with pictures of different
episcia's.

I love SP's color and the tight little compact habit of SS. They're usually in full bloom but just took a little vacation. There's a new bud showing on SS . Normally they've got tons of stolons but I've been taking them off to start more babies for Farmers market next May and turning other back into the pots, pegging them down w/toothpicks to cover bald spot(bald man's comb over).

P

(Zone 1)

I love the leaves on that 'Silver Skies'! Just beautiful! And, 'Strawberry Patch' looks just like her name implies!

Oh Big Red ... I might just have to make a trip to AR to find your Farmer's Market next May! Sure wish our Farmer's Markets had nice plants like these!

Bigred your amazing ! Great growing beautiful babies and plants !
I love growing Epsicas :))
Great Photot of the day ! Thanks so much for sharing your babies with us :))

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

P, sorry I wasn't clear... I didn't mean you'd mid-ID'd your plant, just thought it was interesting that I was seeing two quite different leaf patterns on the same plant... some with silver in the center and going out a bit along the veins, and some with that "checkerboard" pattern near the edge like I've seen on 'Chocolate Soldier'... I was wondering if the former pattern was just what was exhibited by younger leaves, since that also seems to be the pattern on your seedlings...

Fun babies, and great photos!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Darling babiez! Photo of the day too! Congrats!

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

critter,
Went back to look. I see what you mean about different patterns on the same plant.

I was just wondering the other day why I found no episcia webpage that gave each plants parentage and crosses.

P

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

There is one link that tells some 'll find it for you ! You made Photo of the day :)) did you see ! Oh temperture and light and enviromants change colors in foliage just like Av's. They also Sport :))

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Here 's one link. Too small for me to read. I'll try to find the other in my favorites. I have often had Choclate Soldier babies that looked like Silver Skies.

See 1967 Alsobia (reg. as Episcia) 'Cygnet' E. dianthiflora x E. punctata R. E. Lee
But then they change them and gave them their own . They still are Episcias to me grow so much like too !

(Zone 1)

I'm confused .... are Alsobia's and Episcia's the same plant? Or were some kinds of Episcia's once known as Alsobia's?!

Lin

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Alsobia was registered in the 1967 sense then they have been put into their own catorgory. I've grown a few different Alsobias but the one I enjoy growing the best is Cygnet.
Yo me they grow the same way.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Little info from Rob's Violet barn
Alsobias are an extremely easy to grow and bloom member of the Gesneriad family. Formerly classifed as part of the Episcia genus, it shares a similar growth habit.

Oh Thanks Allison!

I bought a couple of little Chirita's from Robs about a month ago .... I have never tried them either, til now. I also bought a Streptocarpus that I was real disappointed in .... one little leaf thing that died right after I received it. I'm going to wait until about February or March and order from Rob's again. I want to get a couple of trailing AV's to try and also I might just have to try one of those Alsobias if they are that easy to grow!

Thanks for the wealth of info that you post here on Daves! It sure is appreciated!

Lin

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Well I can for sure send an Alsobia . Did you call Rob and let him know he would credit you . I did get some nice big trailers from Violet Gallery. last I looked they had a lot of trailers. I gave all mine away. I bet there are people here that will have lots of trailers or and leaves to share in Spring !
I have not bought any Streps for while lasy time I did I bought them from Bluebirds and they were nice big plants and blooming. I bought my Chiritas from them too and they were in 4 inch pots nice size too.
I will have extras Chirita S. Hiasko ( SP )

Allison: Love that Chirita 'S Hiasko' ... beautiful leaves and flowers. I was going to order that one from Robs but they were out of stock. I got 3 little ones, 'Stardust', Silver Surfer' and 'Vietnam' .... I can't wait for them to grow up and bloom! I guess I should have called them about the little Streptocarpus since it didn't arrive in good shape and didn't survive. I will know to call them in the future if it ever happens again. I am going to check out Violet Gallery and Bluebirds. Thanks for that info!

Lin

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

V_T No,I didn't know I made Photo of the day. In here or Dave's Garden in general?

I'll have plenty of noid episcia seedlings to adopt out or trade come spring. I'll have some more Faded Jade,Strawberry Patch and Silver Skies too.
