Pine needles... good for mulching EE's for winter protection

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Is this good for EE's ??
I've noticed that my Lime zinger is not looking too good since I layed down a
layer of pine needles........ or maybe too much fertilizer? not sure but its looking
weak and the leaves are dieing off quickly. Although she's still sending up new ones they are not lasting long or have bright coloring?

any suggestions on what it could be?

Not familiar w/that plant. Hope someone on this site can be of more help to you than I.

Where is Palm Bay? I've lived in south Miami, Saint Pete, Key West, Clearwater & Sarasota but can't place your town in my mind.

Its in Brevard county.
Melbourne, Cocoa,
East coast, central Florida

Pic of plant when I first got it
it used to look like this ,
nice healthy green leaves,
Now that its in the ground its not as bright
and looks weak. Its been in the ground for about one or two months
with no problems.

Wonder if its going dormant?
anyone know?

any soil amendments (ie fertilizer, compost etc) been done?

Mine does fine mulched with pine needles. What type of fertilizer did you use? Personally I'm not sure if you can overfertilize these guys, but all I've ever used was organic and natural stuff (compost, blood meal, etc.)

I would not think it is going into dormancy if it is still putting out new leaves. Mine is in the basement for winter, with one solitary leaf which hasn't completely unrolled since October. No new leaves, either.

Mine is also mulched with pine straw and was fine til the really cold weather we just had. I also gave it alot of fertilizer over the summer with no apparent ill effects. My understanding is that they aren't as vividly colored if they're in complete shade; that is, if it gets a little sun, it has more of that nice chartreuse color, whereas in deep or full shade, it goes a little more conventionally green. Also, I think, they do not like too much water. Moist but not soaking. ....and that's the total sum of my knowlege of this plant! ;)

Dyson: no soil amendments, just right in the ground she went.

Here is a pic of it this morning.
Notice how the leaves are spent already.
Starting to die off. They haven't been up very long.
I have new growth coming, so its not dieing its just not looking as good as it used to in the past.
I had this plant potted for a few months and it looked great, now that its in the ground it doest look as good to me . I dont know maybe I'm just being fussy. ?

DebinSC Wrote "I also gave it alot of fertilizer over the summer", maybe some additional nutrients are called for. I had a bad year in the veggie department because of a lack of them, But I have learned my lesson and next seasons garden will be better.

Not sure what your temps are there ours went to 41 this morn and tomorrow too then back 80's this weekend. Elephant Ears can start having dificulties when temperature falls below 59 or so for more than a few days.
Your plant could still be stressing out some from trans-planting, cooler weather . EE's also like good draining rich organic soil. I would not feed it again until Spring.
Your plant does not look bad really , it may not know if it wants to go dormant or grow new foliage with Floridas crazy weather .
Either way when Spring comes it should grow all new foliage. I would water lightly until warmer weather also.
I'm no expert so I'm sure there are many other helpers . Here we just stick them in the ground and they grow :)) We love them !

Ok thanks,
I'm starting to think that its confused by the weather too.
not sure if it wants to go dormant.

I've seen very little growth but it has been producing leaves about one new one a week.

I think its fine too.
I'm just keeping a close eye on it.

thanks for all the info.
