What fig trees do well in the NW? I want one that bears fruit. I would like to plant it in a container, so how big do they grow? Any info is welcome.
fig trees
Hi Howard4. The best growers are 'Desert King' and 'Brown Turkey'. They typically grow more into a large shrub of 10 - 15' and as wide. In a container you'd probably want to get a larger container. I can't remember which cultivar fruits earlier but one of them atleast double fruits with a smaller set in the late summer/fall. They should have good drainage soil and regular watering in the summer to prevent leaf-drop in a container. The more sun, the better and they benefit from a house overhang. Take a look at the espalied Fig I uploaded in Plant Files.
I have a Brown Turkey, planted 3 years ago in the ground, and it is growing well. It had 4 figs on it this past year. I got it as a small, bare root plant and it is about 4 feet tall now.
Howard4, I have Desert King and it has done well for me. I only get one crop a year out of it. it tries to put on another in the fall, but they never get ripe before the weather gets cold. Jim
Fig trees do not grow in zones lower than 6-7. They and kiwi fruit are pure fantasyland for us in Eastern Washintgon. We had -20 f degrees for 2 nights a few winters ago in Moxee ....... and -24 f degrees in Kennewick. No plants USDA zone 5 or higher live through that kinda weather. Zone 3 plants thrive here.
Fig "Chicago" is listed as Zone 6 and if mulched could do 5. http://www.raintreenursery.com/catalog/productdetails.cfm?ProductID=D320
