Hatches: Batten them down

Issaquah, WA(Zone 7a)

We've already lost a couple trees in the woods :( and the worst is yet to come in terms of tonight's expected winds. I hope all you Northwesterners have your batteries, flashlights, and candles lined up, coffee beans ground for tomorrow morning (I hate grinding coffee beans with a rolling pin LOL- it's just so tedious to get a fine grind!) Protect thyselves, kids, cats, dogs, and plants. Let's hope the brave power linemen get their anticipated repair jobs done quickly and safely.

Will the leaning fir be standing tomorrow?

Well my power just went out...I'm eating dinner by monitor light thanks to battery backup. I think I'll sleep on the couch tonight. The neighbor's tree is aimed at my bedroom.

Issaquah, WA(Zone 7a)

Oh that's so unfair Pard! You have computer/online access and supper simultaneously! I have had Mother Nature-Induced reboots 3 x in 45 minutes. But i think things have settled a bit from half an hour ago. All the storm prep is in place. Chocolate chip cookies lined up, soup made, wood brought in for heat, candles, oil lanterns etc.

I don't like it one little bit when some UW guru says "if you have a tree to the SW of your bedroom, sleep somewhere else...." I have an entire woods to the southwest!

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

That is EXACTLY where this tree is located! I am not sleeping in that bedroom and I will not be a statistic in tomorrow's paper! The outage lasted 1/2 hour, about as long as my battery backup. But I continue getting brownouts and flickers so it's not over yet. I thought I was ready for this-- stopping at the store on the way home from work, getting the candles and flashlights out as soon as I got home, and then getting dinner cooked in just the nick of time. But... I forgot to get the Chocolate! Better known as Comfort Chocolate! I think I will make it an early night, put myself out of misery until morning! That wind is getting really cranked up now...

Shelton, WA(Zone 8a)

Woods to the SW? I'm SURROUNDED by them! Fortunately not too many trees tall enough to reach the house, and those are to the north of the house. Power was out for an hour or so in the late evening, then back off a little after midnight and it's still out. I'm not holding my breath -- thank goodnes for gas-powered generators!

The greenhouse is still standing, but the doors were pulled right out of their tracks early in the evening. I don't know how cold it got out there, so I don't know if I lost my tender plants or not. I won't be able to see the full extent of the damage until tomorrow since I leave for work in the dark and come home in the dark. Sigh ...

Lebanon, OR

Well, got the batteries, had warmed the soup, had the chocolate, the computer started flickering about 4:45P then at 5:10 out everything went. Kerosene lamps lite...daughter called, she still had power in town so invited us for dinner and watching TV and games, off we went...will got to her house as she drove up from going to the store, and via NO LIGHTS. Waited an hour off to Mexican food, home and lights. We came home at 10:00P and still no lights...
Had to remove the top to the cover over the Spa so it would not rip..did not see anything else, but will look today...Lights came on at 2:45A

Thankful for all these linemen who give up many hours and risk to them to get the lines cleared as soon as possible.

Hope that you all are with power today and my battery backup is gone.

Holy cow! I just looked out my back window and somebody's 10-12 foot trampoline is sitting on top of my next door neighbor's shed. I know they don't own a trampoline! It had to have gone up and over a cyclone fence. I'm glad it didn't make it to my yard!

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

Wow, a flying trampoline. It wasn't until 3am when I went to bed that there was any noticeable wind. I don't see any branches, etc moved and we didn't seem to get anything from the storm but it doesn't take much to see what's happening south of us. Every channel on tv had info about downed lines, flooded streets, etc. Is the weather we've had so-far been normal? I can always remember atleast 2 storms each winter but is this not a bit out-of-norm?

Ridgefield, WA

Oh, MzWeazelle .... i sure do hope your tenders will have come through it all unscathed. I'll bet the contents of that greenhouse represent a lot of effort, along with your emotional connection to them. Will it be a very hard repair to get the doors back on the tracks?

Nothing horrible happened here, although the neighbors have trees that have either snapped or been uprooted by the ball. I've just got a lot of clean up to do, snapped branches and a lot of fallen pine boughs to gather. I swear, if i have to reset the clocks one more time .... :)

South Puget Sound, WA(Zone 8a)

Wasn't that a thrilling night? Our power finally went out (after flickering for hours) at about 7:30 last night and still isn't on. The winds were howling so loud it was hard to get to sleep. Thankfully we have a generator, but it's hard to imagine 1.5 million others without power. We too are surrounded by huge trees. We lost an alder, a big section of a 150ft maple, and there are fir boughs all over the yard so I'm thinking of decking the halls! LOL

After hearing about the flying trampoline, I feel fortunate! Our barbecue cover did land in the middle of the pond and the other lawn furniture got knocked over, but at least nothing flew through the air. There were three huge trees blocking the only road out this morning, and two of those were lying on stretched power lines until about an hour ago. Most people out here have generators since we're all on our own wells and without power we have no water. I'm so glad the worst is over! Stay warm everybody!

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

I must correct my previous post. My house is next to an apartment building. It turns out I was completely protected from the wind. Only a block away a large maple blocks the road, a school steeple was blown off and power is out around town. Gee, did I luck out. I feel for you all being hit by this wind.

Brier, WA(Zone 8a)

Flying trampoline... What about flying 3'X10' pieces of roofing that landed in my backyard? Happy that nothing is broken, they landed on empty veggie beds.

Ridgefield, WA

It's really an amazement to think of the force required to lift something off the ground and fling it about. I have a very heavy mat at my back door, so heavy it's kind of a pain for me to pick up and clean, and yet it somehow ended up at the top of the drive! It IS exciting when nature reminds us how very powerful she is.

Gads i'm sore from all the bending and dragging and flinging branches into the woods. But i do feel fortunate.

Did anyone else get hail storms?

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

We had hail. Our awning had collapsed during the last snow storm and had holes in it, etc. So I left it up. That was not a good plan. Awoke at 12:30 this morning by crashing (flying awning) into the neighbors fence, glass patio table went with it, glass everywhere. Fence section fell in. We were up until 2:00 wrestling that beast. Our neighbors got up to help us, thank goodness! Between myself, my husband and our son we could not handle it by ourselves. My face is swollen and red today from the hail. We are all tired. I had to get out the shop vac to suck up all of the broken pieces of glass in the grass. Not fun! Probably looked funny too. :)

We lost power from 1:30 AM until about 2:30 I think. Not bad.

My greenhouse blew panels all over the yard, I'm grateful I didn't heat it up this year.

Albany, OR(Zone 8a)

Was very nasty here last nite too.
It blew and blew and poured down rain.
I went outside to check on my baby plastic greenhouse. Taped it up a bit 2x. Last year, I lost the one side to the zipper for the door, so have to babysit it now a lot. But it came thru fine. But boy, I could hardly stand out there in the wind. It was blowing so hard.....................

Lost power at 8:30 pm until 5 am. Just used flashlight to read for a bit and then went to bed.
Didn't have internet here at home until 3 pm. Didn't have power at work at all so froze my butt off until 12 noon and told the boss I was taking some work home to my warm house. They still didn't get power at work yet as of now. So many people are very cold tonight. That part is sad since it is below freezing now.

Don't have any trees around so that part is safe for me.
But sure hope all you guys came thru ok with no real damage..........................

Ridgefield, WA

I'll have to get a chain saw to chop up the larger bits of storm debris. Any recommendations? I want something light and kind of girley, though it doesn't have to be pink. :)

South Puget Sound, WA(Zone 8a)

OOooh now I know what I want for Christmas - a pink chainsaw! Seriously! I have been threatening to buy a big beefy one for my DH for years, but he says he can just use the bow saw for everything that needs cutting up. Trouble is, stuff doesn't get cut up, and guess where he is today? Skiing! My electric hedge trimmers just don't do the trick -LOL.

We're still without power and last night the phones went dead so the security system is beeping about every 30 seconds...you kind of get used to it, but it's annoying when you're trying to sleep. I have about 10 gallons of gas which should take us into tomorrow with the generator. A broken utility pole is lying to the side of the road and I am thinking it will be at least another day before we get power out here.

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8a)

We did not lose power but phone line is out.. My grandson went out in the wind, I yelled at him and made him comeback inside.. he was alittle upset with me.. saying he would'nt get hurt. I informed him that there are flying branchs out there.. he laughed at me.. and said I was over protective... I showed him the huge branch laying in the yard the next morning and asked if he was prepared to have that on his head... he told me thanks for watching out for him.... lesson learned.. I hope.

I surely hope all are warm and OK today. If I can assist any of you let me know... I have a warm home. You are welcome here.

Shelton, WA(Zone 8a)

Considering all, I think I got off easy here. The sound of wind in the trees was enough to make me want to move away, but we were only without power from about midnight until sometime Friday afternoon. The only damage, other than scads of tree litter, was to the sliding doors on my greenhouse and to the tarp roof on DH's work area. Neither will be difficult to fix, fortunately.

Hoping everyone else gets their power back on soon. I've never been in a power outage in a big city -- I can't imagine how difficult that would be.

Port Orchard, WA(Zone 8a)

it was a dandy!!!!! I have 2nd growth Douglass fir all around my house but they didn't come down, but it sounded like the London blitz on my roof, and there's a lot to clean up (understatement). lost power Thursday 11:30 PM got it back this afternoon. I have several trays of Hosta seedlings growing in my basement, that made it through just fine without light. I guess it would take a lot longer than 2 days without light for them to die, but it's getting down in the 20's F tonight, and I know they wouldn't like that, so I'm glad I have heat and lights again. there are people I know that the power co. said it could be a week until they get power, so I feel lucky. Jim

Issaquah, WA(Zone 7a)

Power is on at work! It's interesting to read of the various and sundry flying trampolines and wayfaring awnings. What a dangerous area you two live in. We were luckier with only a couple trees down, and one precarious highwire leaner on our road. Of course being outlyers, we anticipate no power until early week at home. At least we have water and heat, much less fortunate people abound.

Like a true NW resident, I brought my whole coffee beans and coffee grinder to work LOL! Hope everyone else is recovering from the malicious winds well.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

I was in Eastern Montana when it went through here. Quite difficult to drive down the road in the car. 164MPH sustained winds. Fletcher Pass.

South Puget Sound, WA(Zone 8a)

Still no power here since 7:45 p.m. on Thursday. We filled up all the gas cans last night but gave the generator a rest today while we went to church, which was also still without power. Kind of funny to see the breath in front of our faces during the service and clergy in their ski jackets and gloves! One family about a mile away lost four cars when a multi branched maple tree fell and smashed them all. Fortunately it missed their house. Lots of folks are out cutting firewood alongside our road, but unfortunately no power crews have been out yet to fix the utility poles that are lying down broken or move the wires that we are all having to drive over to get out. They have their hands full, so now it is looking like we won't get power for several more days. The pond was frozen all the way across this morning. Brrrrrrr!

Albany, OR(Zone 8a)

Oh dear, guess you guys should start a bonfire outside and cook hot dogs then. Sorry to hear that tho. You actually drive over the hot lines? Wow.

Ennis, MT(Zone 4a)

My daughter and her family live on Whidbey Island. I am glad I went there last weekend instead of this one! I came home in some bad driving conditions, but got through.

They are doing fine because they have a wood stove, propane range in the kitchen, and a generator hooked up to the freezer. They cannot work until the power is back on, but they are ok.

I was there because my little grandson dances in the Nutcracker and I chose the first weekend to attend. For this, the second weekend, the phone company donated the use of a room sized generator so the performances could go on. Took some major doing but they did it. Unfortunately a guest dancer fell and tore his achilles tendon loose. Apparently the prognosis at this time is he will not dance again. He was beautiful to watch last weekend and I hope he recovers better than they expect.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

galega you must be near Boston harbor cause the rest of the south sound has real wires. I shall pray to get you back on power and for your life to get back on track.

Vashon, WA(Zone 8b)

Phone line is back on again, hopefully for a longer while this time. I am one of the lucky ones in my area who got power back yesterday. However, I don't go to work tomorrow because the school is still without electricity and there are still many impassible or partially blocked roads that the schoolbusses can't get down safely. I'm going to have a problem if there is no school Tueday either, as I have a table loaded with the gifts children made for their families. I will have to make home deliveries all over the island or the kids will be very disappointed. Just call me Santa if that happens, but I have no reindeer or skill diving down chimneys.

South Puget Sound, WA(Zone 8a)

LOL - mauryhillfarm, but I don't envy you making those deliveries if it comes to that! Soferdig - Boston Harbor has power now, I'm pretty sure. My in laws live in that neck of the woods and theirs came back on Saturday. We are out in the woods near Evergreen State College (which is also without power) and the broken poles and wires down our road are untouched even this morning. I should take a photo next time I go out. I haven't even seen trucks in this area yet.

We have propane heat, hot water and a well pump powered by our generator, and I can light the stove if I need to cook, so we have stayed pretty comfortable compared to hundreds of others in the area. Today I am going to wash some clothes and string a clothesline through the kitchen. The dryer draws too much to hook it up with everything else. We've never run the generator this long - hopefully it will keep working! The phone lines are dead yet again, but at least we have cell phones.

Vashon, WA(Zone 8b)

My parents recently moved to Lacey from the midwest. Just a few months ago I helped my mom put together an emergency kit for the eventual earthquake. I didn't know she would need to dig into it so soon because of a windstorm, though I should have realized these are far more frequent. The main problem they had was preparing food for my dad who has Lou Gherig's disease, can only eat blended food, and also has a stomach tube which requires the use of some simple sterilized eqipment. I put a box of baby cereal in their kit which can be mixed to the desired consistency with water, no cooking necessary. I'll need to replace that next time I go visit, and even buy several of them. This event has made me much more aware of how ill prepared I am for a bigger emergency. When we lose power, we have no heat, no water, no phone. I only had enough gallons of water put up to last 2 days. So I am making use of this day off to make a plan and get more things together. We can't afford a generator, but we have access to many chlorinated 5 gallon buckets which I am going to fill with water and put in storage in the shed. I also plan to gat some kind of rain catchment barrel so we have water that I can use to flush the toilet. My property had a six seater outhouse on it when we moved here (had been for pickers in the currant fields) but it was getting dangerous so we removed it. Only appreciate those old ways when I lose my modern conveniences.

Lebanon, OR

One thing we do since we do not have a generator either, is once they say high winds I fill the tub with water. This is that I can flush toilets as needed...We use all those big gatorade bottles for water have about 16-20 of them filled with water, canned goods, lots of batteries, battery clock, kerosene lights...lots of food that we can get cold...the only thing that gets to you after awhile is lack of heat...

Thankful we were only without those things for 12 hours...friends are still without since Thurs.

Take care one and all

Langley, WA(Zone 7b)

Mulchmania, I thought the nutcracker was cancelled??? My son's gf was due to go Fri night but said it was cancelled and an extra show added Sunday, which she went to.

We're on whidbey too. They had said we were going to be hit the hardest but from everything I've read and seen in the papers and news, we got it quite lightly. Reading this post seems to confirm that. We did have no power from 6:30 Thurs eve til 10:30 Sun morning but that was nothing compared to what many folks went thru with damage to their homes from the winds, not to mention flooding.

Gwen

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Gwen, I know everyone on the island lost power for at least awhile, but I agree that it didn't hit us nearly as bad as predicted. I did find attending church in the dark and the cold to be an interesting event, but the other side of that was that it was very intimdate for the 36 of us who braved it, and actually felt wonderful to me - a lot of the pomp and circumstance was eliminated so made it all the more meaningful.

Mulchmania, so glad you got to see your grandson dance!! I know for Saturday's show they advised everyone to bring blankets!!

Shelton, WA(Zone 8a)

My mom lives in North Bend and they still haven't any idea when the lights will come on up there. Sounds like the only places with power are ones with generators, and that includes downtown! I guess they lost a main feeder somewhere and it's taking a long time to get things back together again.

The kids are probably having kittens since it looks like an extra week of vacation, but I imagine they'll be singing a different tune when they figure out how much later they'll have to go this summer.

Langley, WA(Zone 7b)

My kids have been really bored cuz even tho school is out, none of their electronic toys work - LOL - so they couldn't wait to get back to school. And we've already had our school year extended by a week. :(

Murmur, which church do you go to?

Gwen

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Gwen, I go to St. Augustine's in the Woods (in Freeland) - I think you mentioned that you had tried it, but hadn't felt it worked well for kids. I wish it did, but unfortunately an awful lot of the church members are retired people so the younger population is rather small. There are a number of Christmas services - if you're interested, I'll give you the schedule. I don't go to them as a rule, as dh is not a church person and his family is with us on Christmas Eve. Christmas Day we just spend together, and I wouldn't change that of course.

Vashon, WA(Zone 8b)

We had school today, yahoo! There was no bus service so parents had to drive their children in, but I only had 2 absent. We had a good time reading stories, doing art projects, and going to the sing-along. The writing project we finished was pretty shabby though, as they were too excited to concentrate. We even had a party, and I gave the kids their presents to take home. Only had to make 2 home deliveries. I am so glad I got to tell the children how special they are to me and give them their hug, handshake, or high five to say goodbye until the new year.

Sumner, WA(Zone 8a)

Wow...what adventurous stories you all have!

Our power went out Thursday sometime after midnight...the phones followed on Friday...then the cell phone batteries were dead by Saturday morning. My DH was diligently sitting in the truck with the engine running, trying to recharge the cell (in case of emergency).

Thankfully we have gas fireplace and water heater, so there was one heated room and hot showers available. It was a bit more luxurious than camping.

Cooked japanese food over brickettes/BBQ on Saturday. Headed down the store that eve since they got power restored that morning...was surprised that the chocolate/candy and beer aisles were packed out -- I guess everyone is more focused on "COMFORT FOOD" rather than actual nutrition. Had a good chuckle about that.

Sunday we went to check on the store's progress since it had power and contractors had been in working on the build-out. (Unfortunately, it's not to the point where we could go and hang out during the home power outage.) Got back home, walked in the door and boom...power and phones both came back on. What luck! 45 minutes later the power went out, followed by phone...about 5 hours later it all came back on and has been on since.

On a daily basis I forget how much we rely on electricity. The first full day it was out (Friday), nearly everything I thought of doing was followed by, "Oh, I can't do that...need electricity." Was glad to have cards, board games, and books for entertainment...as well as batteries to listen to the news.

I hope everyone is doing well and hasn't had too much difficulty resulting from the storm. I hear that some people in outlying areas are due to be out for up to 7 days. Let's hope that is true. The last one of these (in 1993) there were folks w/o power for upwards of two weeks...

Keep safe.

I'm enjoying the stories and good advice above! We are on day six without power, but at least they replaced the broken utility poles last night. People were so glad to see the crews out that car after car stopped and gave the workers food and treats. We are optimistic that we will get back on today. I can't wait to use the oven and dryer again! Fortunately the generator is still running.

Ennis, MT(Zone 4a)

I lived on Lopez Island during the one in '93. Our power was out a week, the woods were really wrecked from the trees going down, not one by one, but in clumps of several at a time. We had wood heat and propane cooking range, so all our friends came for hot coffee in the mornings that week. We were the cozy warm happening place...

Hi, finally checking in with everyone. We got our power back late Monday night. When my son and I saw the work crews scouting out our downed power lines, we jumped up and down in greeting. We did a happy dance. I drove into town and bought them donuts. These folks have worked their tushies off getting power back to people. We are grateful to them. We had many large branches down, and our yard was covered with smaller branches - a veritable green yard in December! But no damage and the greenhouse still stands! (That's the important thing, you know.). Our backyard neighbor got a fir tree through his roof, and the guy across the street lost a really big fir, but amazingly, it fell the only way it could have possibly fallen to avoid damaging anything at all. What luck! We have a lot of fir trees in our area and there are enough of them that they offer some protection to one another in general, but people do occasionally lose one. This one broke off in the middle of the trunk. Wierd.
Our back fence blew down so the dogs had a field day engaging the corgies who live behind us. You know, people who don't know 'dog' behavior should reconsider owning dogs. Our dogs bark at each other through the fence but we figured that if they ever actually got in contact with each other, there would be lots of posturing and barking and maybe a bit of 'rolling over' , but no damage. We have Australian shepherds, not exactly known for their fighting temperament, and the neighbor's corgies are also herding dogs, albeit a bit nastier of disposition (especially their dogs who are loathed by the entire neighborhood). Our two Aussies got into the neighbor's garage and one of the corgies was in there, so the barking and posturing commenced. I'm satisfied to stand back until the fray is over and let everyone work things out. The neighbor's 21 year old son, however, is evidently not a 'dog' person. He and the dad came running into the garage, knocking each other down trying to get through the door to their backyard in their haste to beat each other to the 'dog fight', and the son began to beat my dogs with his rake. When I yelled that they were all working it out and tried to point out that, while plenty noisy, no fur was flying and no blood was streaming, I thought he was going to turn the rake on me. He grabbed my big dog, who is 11 years old, and practically threw her back and then went for my smaller dog (who is our problem child, admittedly). He's lucky he did not get bitten by his own dog in the process. Talk about over reacting! I've never liked this kid one bit and my instincts were fully justified after seeing how he treated my dogs. If the rake had been sturdier than a leaf rake, he would have severely injured both of them. Our Aussies sulked home at my command, no worse for the wear, fortunately. We put up a temporary fence until the main fence is fixed. Don't want to take a chance on our dogs meeting again and maybe, gasp!, actually working it out in their dog way! They ought to take their dogs to the dog park for a little social interaction. Maybe they would learn something in the process.

Other than that incident, we just camped out at home. We have a wood insert in the fireplace in the family room and I slept in there one night because it was too cold in the rest of the house. We have lanterns, etc, for emergencies since the power goes out frequently around here. Just when we thought 'this is getting old', they fixed the power. Yea!
