What kind of pots for AV's?

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

I enjoyed winning Bingo and receiving so many av's that Lauri sent me as a prize. They've now grown so well from the tiny pots that have been sitting on top of a small container of water (using string as a straw). Now it's time for most to be transplanted into a larger pots. What type of pot can I buy that will still use the string wicking method? That seems to be just the trick for not over or under watering the av's.

The best type of pots are plastic with holes. Shallow /short azela pots. Beware of over potting as African violets don't like pots too large.
A miniature and Semiminiature can grow in 2 inch 2.25 inch pots size never larger.
Standards are good in 4 inch pots for life exceot for showing or growing large plants over 14 inches across.
Rule of thumb is to use a pot that is 1/3 the size of your plants. Please take roots system into concideration also. So if a plant is 6 inches acroxx you will want it in a 2 inch pot !
Happy growing :))
PS use light soil-less mix. Slightly moist. I like mixing mine with atleast 50 percent perlite . This is important for growing all plants but a must for wicking !

I was hoping you were out there, Allison. I appreciate the advice! Now I have an idea of what I need to look for at the nurseries and home centers.
I was thinking that I would need a bigger pot so now I'm really glad I asked before I went shopping!

Always soak new pots in bleach and hot water before using them.

HI guys. I'm just wondering, why should we bleach new pots?? Just in case any bacteria or something is lurking in it??

Make sure their clean and free of egg and pest. These things can not be seen qith the naked eye.
Some where on a thread I showed my bath tub full of hundreds of pots soaking over night in bleach. I use to do this with my trays and plastic boxes too !

Brand new pots....soak in bleach? Eggs...pests?

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Yes brand new pots. Where do you think they store thousand of pots before they are sold. OK this is not for weak stomachs but did you know you should clean the top of cans before opening as eggs can not be seen .
One thing I learned at local Av meeting is to bleach soak all new and used pots. One long time grower told my husband and I she keeps a large platic trash can filled with bleach with pots soaking all the time !
I also learned to throw away used packaging material .
Sterilizing soil is a good practice too.
Sterilizing all tools work areas in plant room before working on plants and in-between is very important too.
Washing well after working outside in garden beds, or with infected plants . Pest can be under your nails even.
