How about a roundup in/near Edmonton/Red Deer/Drumheller this summer, before or after NALS (July 14ish)
Itchy footed inanda
Next roundup
Im working on one in Calgary! Will start the planning after Christmas.
Good stuff. Dates?? Approx date???
Mid June if it is agreeable to those most interested in coming.
OK. Thanks. At least it is between iris & lily bloom.
Before school is out??? (Thinking of my Guerrilla garden kids).
edited to ask if you have started an RU thread somewhere?

What's a roundup?
No Inanda I have not done anything yet. We did discuss this briefly this spring but I put it off until 2007. I do have a file with the names of those Cdns in the West who expressed interest. I will post here and on the RU thread when I get going!
I like mid June because most of our gardens will be in early bloom . Stampede is July 6-15 and best avoided. July long weekend is no good for me. May long weekend is really too early as far as gardens are concerned unless we have an early spring. May is of course plant buying month around here so early May might work well too but gardens except for those of us who have 'spring' gardens with lots of bulbs will not be far along.
Guess it depends on what people want to do at a roundup. Ive never been to one so I dont know! Anyway I will do a post with some alternate dates and we will see what happens.
Patience!
Roadrunner (Jo) fromHereford, AZ came up with the idea of a Roundup originally (in 2002 if I'm remembering old posts well). She thought it would be nice for the people that met each other @ Daves to get have a get-together and trade plants. The very first one was held in Crossville, TN.
A year and a half ago the Canadian contingent decided it would be nice to do it as well. Linda (MG99) was our host and many of us came by car or plane to Victoria to learn about Brugs, visit Butchart Gardens/ Victoria's greenhouses, tour, and, of course, trade plants. We also had a wonderful Chinese feast at Heatherbelle's house. Many stayed at Linda's house and some stayed in hotels.
We had originally thought of camping but the first one was held at the end of April (Victoria/April/rain :S).

The American members post their RoundUp plans in this forum: http://davesgarden.com/forums/f/roundup/all/
And the after pictures here: http://davesgarden.com/forums/f/rounduppix/all/
We kept our planning in this forum since many Canadians wouldn't think of looking at the first link above.
Thanks to our resident ref. librarian Pam!!!!
RU activities last time were a plant swop, lots of chat, lots of food, shopping, (nurseries) visiting tourist attractions, camper vans, hotels, staying with other DGers. Lots of laughter.
Maybe get all who show interest to enter their preferred dates. June seems a bit late as we'll all be in our own gardens. As far as I'm concerned, no prairie dog show dates, not during iris/lily conventions, certainly not Stampede time - umm... what else. And certainly after snow is finished. Will have to go see how many Calgary DGers there are.
inanda
Lots of members in Calgary but I seem to be the only subscriber. And there are several other subscribers not too far outside of town who post too. And some active subscribers in Edmonton.
After the snow has finished? Hmmmmmmmm! That pretty well rules out every month of the year I think!
We could do it in May also although I personally will be pretty busy all of April with a dog trial (I am Trial Secretary)Well we will see come January!
ANYTHING doggish Sec. Oh dear, no time.
G
Hey Fancyvan, tomorrow's January....
Can you tell I'm itchin to go somewhere!? June is good for me, except for the 16th, that's me mum's BD.
How about an EASTERN round up? Anyone interested in planning one or helping? Dunno about others, but with a trip to Vancouver in March for my daughter's wedding and to Australlia in late June-early July, I'm not likely to hop a plane for Calgary this year.
Ann
Not dealing with any round ups yet! Got hort soc. workshop planning on my hands and need to get the premium list for an agility trial ready to post and then I will think about the roundup!
annabelle and i will be in england from may 21 to may 31 so june would be better for us and we will have lots of pics and stories from chelsea if you are interested. the canadian contingent is probably large enuff to do both an eastern and western roundup
april early may in this part of the country is toooo unpredictable
fancy you sound busier than most of us who work full time
Hey a 'report' on Chelsea would be great!I agree May is pretty unpredictable. I am really seriously thinking mid June will be best. More later!
However I am open to people feeding me ideas what they want to do etc etc. and then I will keep them all in my round up file . Bear in mind than any chosen date is not going to suit everybody who might like to come!
Well when you retire you can be as busy as you like! I try to have something that takes me out of the house every day ( excluding dog walks!) Most of what I am involved with just now is done on the phone or the computor.
Hey Ann, I would be interested in an Eastern roundup for sure. I've never even been to one, let alone planned one, but I would be more than willing to help someone else if I'm given a little guidance.
--Ginny
Hi Ann & Ginny, an Eastern Roundup sounds interesting. How far East, though? Montreal? St. Johns, NL? Both have great Botanical Gardens. Should we start an Eastern Roundup thread?
June
Starting a new thread for a possible eastern roundup is probably good. We don't want to hijack this one. How far east is a very good question. My vote, of course, would be for Ontario :-) Seriously, if it moves outside ON I would probably, and regretfully, have to withdraw my offer of assistance. I can't guarantee I would be able to be involved in one in any other place.
--Ginny
I'll be in Calgary from May 18-June 2, but that sounds like it will be too early for most people. I'd be happy to help organize one in the east if held in Newfoundland...it helps that I work at the Botanical garden and I organized the North American Rock Garden Society meeting held here in 2005 (200 people).
It would certainly be a bonus to have you organizing an eastern roundup Todd.
Ann, since this was originally your suggestion, do you want to start a new thread for this so we could gauge the level of interest? If most people plan on attending a "western" roundup we may find that many will not be able to attend an "eastern" one as well.
Somewhere WestJet flies. I REFUSE to fly AC. NEVER EVER. What about Canada Blooms or is that too soon. What horticultural goes on in PQ ? Montreal or Quebec City? BNfld is a preatty hefty airfare Todd, for us Westerners.
inanda
Canada Blooms is a great idea, but it probably is too early. It runs from March 7 to 11 this year.
Todd: when do you leave on the 2nd June? Is that a firm date?I was thinking one of the first 3 weekends in June for a RU.
Guess it is a good idea to have a western and an eastern RU.
inanda
And you are in the middle so you get to go to both? :)
I am on a tight schedule and have to leave on the 2nd..back to work on the 3rd. I'll be spending most of my time on my brothers farm south of Lethbridge. Normally I am in Calgary but with the new farm, he wants me to landscape the grounds! I'll be kept pretty busy creating a xeric garden for him.
Todd if you make a side trip to Drumheller to see the Badlands please let me know as I would love to meet you.
Dianne
Todd:Well I guess we will all have to come and visit you in Lethbridge - at least those of us in S. Alberta!
Depending on the date, I may be able to schedule my trip out West to visit family when the Western roundup happens.
With regards to Eastern roundup - what does it entail to organize a roundup? Hotels? Organized activities? I've never been to one.
Sandy
Sorry I've not been watching. Had optional laser surgery on my eyes just after Christmas and have a huge party this afternoon; so haven't spent much time on the computer.
If nobody has done it, I'll be happy to start a thread about an Eastern round-up.
Ann
edited to add the link to a new thread - http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/682455/

Most US RUs seem to take place at some public venue like a park. Seems to consist of a plant swop, lots of potluck food, maybe a BBQ, lots of chatter.
The first Cdn. RU was in Victoria, over several days with the venue at Lindas.(MGG) Linda and Cheryl were very gracious hosts. People were billeted, in hotels as well as campers parked in driveways. Somehow Linda and Cheryl coped with 3 or 4 out-of-towners staying with them. Tons of good food, talk, getting to know people; a great slide show on brugs from Brugcrazy. Lots of sightseeing of course. Must mention plant swop too. All in all, a fun time was had by everyone, though am sure it took Linda and Cheryl some time to recover.
